High Yield Strength Hollow Section
Details
We manufacture structural hollow sections with minimum yield strength from 355 to 460 MPa, in square (SHS), rectangular (RHS) and circular (CHS) shapes. Yield strength is the figure your structural engineer designs to, so we state it per grade, per wall thickness and per lot, not as one headline number.

High Yield Strength Hollow Section Range We Manufacture

Yield level Grades we supply Production route Typical wall range we run Section types
355 MPa class S355J2H, S355K2H Cold-formed or hot-finished 2.5 to 40 mm SHS, RHS, CHS
420 MPa class S420MH Cold-formed, thermomechanically rolled 2.5 to 16 mm SHS, RHS, CHS
460 MPa class S460MH, S460NH Cold-formed (MH) or hot-finished (NH) MH to about 16 mm, NH heavier walls SHS, RHS, CHS

What Does a Higher Yield Level Give Your Structure?

More load per square millimetre of steel. A member's strength capacity rises with yield, so the same load can be carried by a thinner wall or a smaller section.

Slimmer columns and chords. Where architecture fixes the outside size, higher yield lets you keep the footprint and increase the load.

Less steel to buy, cut, weld and coat. Lower tonnage reduces fabrication hours and surface area to paint or galvanize.

One honest note from our side: yield raises strength, not stiffness. If deflection or vibration governs your design, a higher yield grade will not reduce it, and we will say so at quotation rather than sell you a grade you do not need.

Yield Strength Changes with Wall Thickness

This is the point most often missed on drawings. The minimum yield in the product standard steps down as the wall gets thicker. A 460 MPa grade is a 460 MPa grade for thinner walls only; heavier walls fall into a lower yield band.

What we do about it:

  • We state the yield value for your actual wall thickness on the quotation, so your design check uses the right number from the start
  • We keep the yield band for each wall on the EN 10204 3.1 certificate
  • If your design needs a higher yield in a heavy wall, we propose a different route or grade instead of leaving the gap for you to find later

Yield in the Flats and in the Corners

On cold-formed SHS and RHS, forming raises yield in the corner zones compared with the flat faces. This is a benefit for strength and we do not ask you to rely on it in design, but it explains why test location matters. We cut tensile specimens from the position the standard requires and can test the flat and corner separately when your specification asks for it. CHS has no corner zones, so its yield is more uniform around the section.

Yield-to-Tensile Ratio for Ductile Design

As yield rises toward tensile strength, the steel has less ductility reserve between first yielding and fracture. For plastic design, seismic frames and members that must deform before they fail, this ratio matters.

We report yield and tensile values per lot so the ratio can be checked from the certificate, and where your project sets a ratio limit, we confirm it before production and select coil and route to suit. Hot-finished S460NH is the route we usually propose when ductile behaviour and uniform properties are priorities.

Where Is High Yield Strength Hollow Section Used?

  • Long-span roof trusses and stadium structures where chord weight is a load
  • Columns and bracing in multi-storey buildings with slim architectural limits
  • Crane booms, work platforms and mobile equipment frames
  • Transmission towers, telecom masts and lattice structures
  • Footbridges, canopies and curved architectural members
  • Port, offshore and industrial platforms using hot-finished heavy wall sections
  • Trailer, agricultural and mining equipment frames under repeated loading

How Do We Back the Yield Figure on Your Certificate?

  • Tensile testing per lot, tied to the coil or heat number, with yield, tensile and elongation on the certificate
  • Charpy impact testing on J2, K2, ML and NL grades at the specified temperature
  • Chemistry and carbon equivalent per heat, supplied for your welding procedure
  • Dimensional inspection of size, wall, straightness and corner radius before release
  • Marking of grade, size and heat number on every bundle
  • EN 10204 3.1 certificate as standard, 3.2 with SGS, BV or TUV witness on request

Case: Heavy-Wall Columns Checked Against the Right Yield Value

A steel contractor in the Middle East sent us a drawing for 12 pcs of 300x200x20 mm S460NH RHS, 6 m long (about 10 t). Their calculation used 460 MPa as the design yield for every wall in the project.

At quotation, our engineer pointed out that 20 mm wall falls in a lower yield band, 440 MPa instead of 460 MPa. The contractor's designer re-checked the columns before ordering, and the section passed with a small utilisation increase. The check took one day, and it avoided finding the mismatch at third-party document review, after the steel was cut.

FAQ

Q: Does a higher yield grade lose toughness at low temperature?

A: Not when the right subgrade is chosen. N and NL grades (hot-finished) and ML grades (cold-formed) are supplied with impact testing at specified temperatures. Tell us the lowest service temperature and we will confirm the subgrade.

Q: Is the yield on the certificate measured from the finished tube or from the coil?

A: It is measured on test pieces taken from the finished tube in the way the product standard requires, and tied to the coil or heat number. Specimens from the corner zone can be added on request.

Q: Do high yield sections cost more than S355?

A: Price per tonne is higher. Because you need less tonnage for the same load, the total steel cost often comes out close, and fabrication and coating savings come on top. We can quote both grades side by side.

Q: Can you limit the yield-to-tensile ratio?

A: Yes, as a project requirement agreed before production. We confirm what is achievable for the grade, wall and route.
