What is the AS/NZS 1163 ?
This Standard specifies the requirements for the production and supply of cold-formed,electric resistance-welded, steel hollow sections used for structural purposes. It considersthree strength grades, with or without impact properties, that are suitable for welding.
Notes: This Standard applies to structural hollow sections formed cold without subsequent heat treatment.
Designation
AS/NZS 1163 means number of this standard.
- C : cold-formed sections
- 350: minimum yield strength in Mpa
- L : guaranteed impact properties of the material
- 0 : low temperature impact test at 0℃
Notes: The finshed hollow section product shallbe manufactured by the cold-forming process anduse electric resistance-welding techniques to join the strip edges. The weld seam is to belongitudinal and shall have the external upset removed. There shall be no subsequentoverall heat treatment on the finished product.
Chemical Composition
Cast Chemical Composition
The chemical composition of castings refers to the measurement of the chemical composition of the raw materials used in the manufacture of steel pipes.
Notes: It should be noted that casting analysis is not a chemical composition analysis of the finished steel pipe.

Product Chemical Composition
Chemical analysis of the finished product is not a requirement of this Standard. If the steelis subjected to a finished product analysis, which is required to meet both the casting chemical composition in the table above and the chemical composition deviations in the table below.
Notes: Product Chemical Composition refers to the chemical composition of the finished AS 1163 steel pipe.

Mechanical Properties
The mechanical properties of AS 1163 can be measured using three tests: Tensile test, Impact test and Cold Flattening test.
Prior to tensile or impact testing, the test pieces shall be aged by heating to a temperature between 150°C and 200°C for not less than 15 min.
Tensile Requirement
The tensile test measures the yield strength, tensile strength and elongation of AS 1163 and the test shall comply with the requirements of AS 1391.

| C450, C450L0 | 450 | 500 | 12 | 14 | 16 | 10 | 12 | 14 |
| Note: These limits apply to the face from which the tensile test is taken. That is, for RHS, the use of the b/t or d/t ratio is dependent on which face the test specimen is cut from. For SHS, there is only one ratio (as b = d). | ||||||||
If the cross-sectional area is greater than 1000 mm², the elongation requirement for structural steel tubes should be reduced by 2% from the standard requirement.
Impact Requirement
Hollow structural tubes with wall thicknesses ≥ 6 are required to perform a 0°C impact test by AS 1544.2. However, wall thickness <6mm does not require impact testing.

Cold Flattening Requirement
Cold Flattening is suitable for tubes with circular hollow sections.
Hold the specimen flat between two parallel planes until the distance between the surfaces is 0.75 outer diameter or less and there should be no evidence of cracks or defects.
