What Is S460MH Hollow Section According to EN 10219?
EN 10219 covers cold-formed welded structural hollow sections of non-alloy and fine grain steels. In the grade name S460MH, the letters carry the meaning:
- S means structural steel.
- 460 is the minimum yield strength in MPa for typical wall thicknesses.
- M means the steel is delivered in the thermomechanically rolled condition.
- H means hollow section.
We make S460MH by cold-forming thermomechanically rolled coil into a square, rectangular or round section and welding the seam by high frequency or submerged arc, depending on size. We supply SHS, RHS and CHS in this grade.
Which Sizes Do We Supply in S460MH?
High strength grades are formed within a narrower range than S355, so we quote exact sizes by inquiry. Typical supply:
- SHS and RHS: up to about 400 mm side length, wall up to about 16 mm
- CHS: OD from 21.3 mm to 508 mm, wall up to about 16 mm
- Lengths: 6 m and 12 m standard, cut lengths on request
- Finish: black, varnished, painted or hot-dip galvanized
Yield strength in EN 10219 is stepped by wall thickness, and thicker walls carry a lower minimum yield than thinner ones. If your design uses the full 460 MPa, tell us the wall, and we check it against the table in the edition of the standard you follow.
What Does EN 10219 Guarantee, and What Must You Still Specify?
The standard has two parts, and each answers a different question.
| Part | What it settles |
|---|---|
| EN 10219-1 | Technical delivery: steel grade, chemistry, mechanical properties, testing, marking, CE conformity |
| EN 10219-2 | Tolerances: dimensions, wall thickness, straightness, squareness, corner shape, mass |
Beyond that, several points are left to the order, and we ask about them so nothing is decided by default:
- Impact temperature. S460MH is impact-tested at -20 degC; for colder service we offer the MLH route at -50 degC.
- Inspection document. 3.1 mill certificate as standard, 3.2 with third-party witnessing on request.
- Length tolerance and cut ends, if your cutting line needs a closer range.
- Coating, where the paint or zinc system affects surface preparation.
Why Does Thermomechanically Rolled Steel Need Care?
The strength of S460MH comes from controlled rolling and cooling at the steel mill, not from a heavy alloy or from normalizing later. That gives low carbon, good weldability and good toughness, and it also sets rules for your workshop.
- Do not normalize it. Heat treatment above the mill's process temperature removes the rolled-in strength.
- Keep hot work below about 580 degC on straightening or bending by flame. Above that, the yield strength falls.
- Cold bending and rolling are fine, with a larger minimum radius than S355.
- Hot-dip galvanizing is compatible. Zinc bath temperature is well below the limit above.
We state these points in our order confirmation, so your workshop hears them before the steel arrives.
What Do CE Marking and Traceability Mean for You?
Structural hollow sections used in the EU or under EN 1090 fabrication need CE marking and factory production control at the tube maker. Our documentation covers:
- CE declaration of performance for the product
- EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificate with heat number, chemistry, tensile and impact results
- Coil-to-bundle traceability, so a tube in your fabrication can be traced to its heat
- Marking on every tube: grade, size, standard, heat number and lot
Your steelwork inspector sees one document set, and it matches the tube marking.
How Do We Control Dimensional Accuracy?
Hollow-section fabrication is judged by how well parts fit at assembly, so we control more than the minimum EN 10219-2 asks.
- Straightness checked per bundle, with a tighter internal limit than the standard
- Corner radius and squareness measured on SHS and RHS, since corner shape affects weld access and node fit
- Wall thickness measured at the seam and opposite side, not only at one point
- Seam position marked on request
Case: How Did Tighter Straightness Cut a Truss Fabricator's Rework?
A steel-truss fabricator in Poland ordered 18 tonnes of S460MH SHS, 120 x 120 x 6.3 mm, to feed an automated laser cutting cell. Their earlier supplier's tubes were within the standard, but about 1 in 5 bars needed manual straightening before the cell would accept them.
We shipped 6 m and 12 m lengths sorted and bundled by straightness, with an internal limit of about 1 mm per metre, checked on each bundle. On the 310 bars delivered, none needed straightening, and the cell ran two shifts a day without stopping to reload rejects.
FAQ
Q: Can S460MH be supplied with a 3.2 certificate?
A: Yes. We arrange witnessing with SGS, BV, TUV or your nominated agency, and we tell you the extra days needed at order.
Q: Is S460MH the same as S460NH?
A: No. S460MH is cold-formed from thermomechanically rolled coil, while S460NH is hot-finished and normalized. They fit different sizes, wall ranges and site conditions, so state which one your drawing calls for.
Q: Can you supply S460MH square and round in one shipment?
A: Yes. Mixed SHS, RHS and CHS lots are common on truss projects, and we load them together with labeled bundles.
Q: Can S460MH be welded to S355 members?
A: Yes. Select the filler metal and preheat for the higher-strength side, and we supply the CEV of every heat to help you set it.
