What Is S460NH Hollow Section According to EN 10210?
EN 10210 covers hot-finished structural hollow sections of non-alloy and fine grain steels. In the name S460NH:
- S means structural steel.
- 460 is the minimum yield strength in MPa at typical wall thickness.
- N means the steel is in the normalized condition.
- H means hollow section.
We make S460NH by hot-finishing the tube, meaning it is formed at high temperature or normalized after forming, so the whole section leaves the mill in one uniform metallurgical state. We supply CHS, SHS and RHS in this grade.
Which Sizes Do We Supply in S460NH?
Hot-finishing suits heavier sections than the cold-formed route. Typical supply, with exact sizes confirmed by inquiry:
- CHS: OD from about 88.9 mm to 610 mm, wall up to about 40 mm
- SHS and RHS: up to about 400 mm side length, wall up to about 40 mm
- Lengths: 6 m and 12 m standard, cut lengths on request
- Finish: black, varnished, painted, or hot-dip galvanized
Minimum yield strength in EN 10210 steps down as the wall gets thicker. If your design uses the full 460 MPa on a thick wall, tell us the exact wall, and we check it against the edition of the standard you follow.
Why Choose the Hot-Finished Route for High Strength Steel?
The main difference is where the properties come from. A cold-formed tube is strengthened locally by forming, so the corners and the seam zone differ from the flat faces. A hot-finished tube is the same steel condition all the way around.
- Uniform properties around the section, with no cold-worked corners or seam-zone gradients to account for in node design
- Low residual stress, which helps fatigue and dimensional stability after cutting or welding
- Heavy walls in one piece, so thick chords and heavily loaded nodes need no build-up plates
- Stable behavior under dynamic loading, which matters for cranes, offshore-type structures and bridges
When Should You Pick S460NH Over S460MH?
We supply both, and each has its place. A short guide from our side:
| Your project | Route we suggest |
|---|---|
| Heavy wall, thick chords, fatigue-loaded nodes | S460NH (hot-finished) |
| Light to medium wall trusses, high volume, tight dimensions | S460MH (cold-formed) |
| Service below -20 degC | S460NLH, hot-finished, impact-tested at -50 degC |
| Design drawing quotes EN 10210 | S460NH, so the certificate matches the drawing |
If you are not sure, send the drawing and the loading type, and we tell you which route we would choose and why.
What Does Normalized Mean for Toughness and Fabrication?
- Impact-tested by lot, with S460NH at -20 degC and the NLH grade at -50 degC.
- Fine grain structure gives a wide margin between strength and toughness, even on heavy walls.
- Weld with a controlled procedure. We report carbon equivalent per heat on the certificate, so preheat is calculated from real values.
- Hot forming within limits. If you hot-bend or straighten by flame, keep to the normalizing temperature range, and ask us for the mill process window.
- Hot-dip galvanizing is compatible, and we can control chemistry for the zinc coating if you tell us at order.
What Documents and Marking Come with Every Order?
- CE marking and declaration of performance under EN 10210-1
- EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate, with heat number, chemistry, tensile and impact results
- 3.2 certificate with SGS, BV, TUV or your nominated agency
- Marking on every tube: grade, size, standard, heat number and lot
- Dimensional inspection to EN 10210-2 tolerances, with wall thickness measured at several points around the section
Where Is S460NH Used?
Bridge arches and chords, offshore-type platforms and jackets, crane and lifting structures, stadium and long-span roof nodes, towers, and heavy plant frames.
FAQ
Q: What is the difference between S460NH and S460NLH?
A: Both are hot-finished and normalized. NLH is impact-tested at a lower temperature, -50 degC, and is used for cold-climate or offshore service.
Q: Can S460NH be supplied as SHS or RHS, or only as CHS?
A: We supply all three shapes. Hot-finished square and rectangular sections have larger corner radii than cold-formed ones, so check the fit at your joints.
Q: Is S460NH more expensive than S460MH?
A: Usually yes per tonne, since hot-finishing has a higher production cost. On heavy-wall or fatigue-loaded work, the saving on plates and joints can offset the difference, and we can quote both routes for you to compare.
Q: Can you supply a 3.2 certificate with witnessing?
A: Yes. We arrange the third-party visit and tell you the extra days needed at order.
