Tianjin Brisk Metalwork Co., Ltd. is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of s460 structural hollow section for high strength steel structures in China. We have world-leading production equipment and strong manufacturing capabilities. Please feel free to buy bulk durable s460 structural hollow section for high strength steel structures from our factory.
Why Does S460 Fail at the Weld Bench, Not on the Drawing?
High strength steel is only as good as the joint made from it. Most S460 problems we hear about come from a fabricator using S355 welding habits on S460 material: too little preheat, too much heat input, or moist consumables. The result is toe cracking, hardened heat-affected zones or softened ones.
So we treat weldability as part of the product, not as your problem after delivery.
How Do We Make S460 Weld-Ready?
| What we do | What it gives your welders |
|---|---|
| Carbon equivalent (CEV) reported per heat on the certificate | A number you can plug straight into your preheat calculation |
| CEV window agreed with you at order | The same weld procedure works across every lot |
| Low-sulphur, low-phosphorus steelmaking with per-heat chemistry | Cleaner weld metal, fewer hot-cracking surprises |
| Coil traceability from heat number to tube bundle | If a joint ever behaves differently, we trace it to the exact heat |
| Seam position marking on request | Seam kept away from the node zone you designate |
For the thermomechanically rolled S460MH route, the low carbon design gives good weldability, but the strength comes from rolling, not from alloy. Very high heat input can soften the heat-affected zone. We will tell you this at quotation, so your weld procedure keeps the heat input inside a controlled window.
What Sizes Can We Supply in S460?
S460 ranges are narrower than S355, because higher strength coil is harder to form. The figures below are typical, and we confirm the exact size by inquiry.
| Shape | Typical S460 supply |
|---|---|
| SHS / RHS (cold-formed) | Up to about 400 mm side, wall up to about 16 mm |
| CHS (cold-formed) | OD 21.3 mm to 508 mm, wall to about 16 mm |
| CHS / SHS (hot-finished) | Heavier walls, up to about 40 mm, size by inquiry |
| Standard lengths | 6 m and 12 m, cut lengths on request |
| Finish | Black, varnished, painted, or hot-dip galvanized |
If your size sits at the edge of this range, send the drawing and we will say yes or no at once.
How Do We Test S460 Before It Ships?
- Tensile and impact tests by lot, at the temperature your project requires.
- Weld seam NDT on welded product, full length.
- Hardness check across the seam on request, useful for procedure qualification.
- Dimensional inspection of side length or OD, wall, straightness and squareness.
- Third-party witnessing by SGS, BV, TUV or your nominated agency, with an EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificate.
Case: How Did We Help a Crane-Boom Fabricator Stop Weld Cracking?
A crane-jib fabricator in the Middle East ordered 26 tonnes of S460MH RHS, 150 x 100 x 8 mm, replacing S355 to save weight. On the first 12 trial joints, welded in a cold workshop, 3 showed toe cracking.
We sent the heat-by-heat CEV data and the lot's chemistry within one day. Their engineer set the preheat to 100 degC, changed to low-hydrogen consumables baked before use, and limited the heat input per pass. The next 60 production joints passed with no cracking, and the jib came out about 14% lighter than the S355 design.
The tube did not change. The weld procedure did, and it was easy to set because the data was on the certificate.
How Do We Pack, Mark and Ship S460 So It Arrives Ready to Weld?
High strength steel is sensitive to moisture at the weld joint, so how it travels matters. We pack S460 with that in mind.
- Bundled by heat number. Each bundle holds tubes from one heat only, so the chemistry and CEV on your certificate match the tubes in your hands.
- Marked on every tube. Grade, size, heat number and lot are stenciled on each piece, and bundle tags carry the same data plus your position number if you give us one.
- Kept dry. Bundles are wrapped in waterproof sheeting with desiccant for sea freight, and end caps are fitted on request, so water and dirt stay out of the bore.
- Coated if you want it. Black tubes carry a thin protective varnish. If your weld procedure needs bare steel at the joint, tell us and we leave the weld zones clean.
- Loaded to fit. 12 m lengths go into 40 ft containers, and longer or heavier members ship on flat rack or breakbulk, with dunnage that keeps the corners of SHS and RHS from being crushed.
FAQ
Q: Who sets the preheat temperature, you or the fabricator?
A: The fabricator does, based on the joint thickness, consumables and site conditions. We give the per-heat chemistry and CEV, so the calculation starts from real numbers.
Q: Can S460 hollow section be hot-dip galvanized?
A: Yes. Silicon content affects how the zinc coating grows, so tell us at order, and we will control the chemistry to suit galvanizing.
Q: Can S460 be cold bent or roll-bent?
A: Yes, but with a larger minimum radius than S355. Send us the bend radius and we will confirm the wall and route.
Q: Do you supply trial pieces for weld procedure qualification?
A: Yes. We can cut short pieces from the same heat you will receive, so your procedure test matches the production material.
