S275J0H Hollow Section
Details
We manufacture S275J0H structural hollow section to order, and we ship it under two different European standards that share the exact same grade designation. That single fact trips up more buyers than any other spec question we get on this grade, so it is the right place to start before we get into shapes, sizes, and testing.

What Does the J0H Suffix Actually Tell You?

S275J0H is a fine-grain structural steel with a guaranteed minimum yield strength around 275 MPa and an impact toughness requirement verified at 0 degC - the "J0" part of the name. It sits between the untested JRH grade and the colder-rated J2H grade, and the "H" simply marks it as a hollow-section-specific designation, separate from the S275J0 flat/plate grade you will see quoted for beams and plate.

What buyers often miss: the designation "S275J0H" is not tied to one manufacturing route. The identical grade name appears in two separate product standards:

  • EN 10210-1 - hot-finished hollow section
  • EN 10219-1 - cold-formed hollow section

Same chemistry target, same 0 degC impact criterion, same "1.0149" material number - but two different production processes, two different certificate headers, and in some cases two different section size ranges. If your purchase order just says "S275J0H" without naming the standard, you are leaving that choice to whoever fills the order.

EN 10210 or EN 10219 - Which Route Do You Actually Need?

We run S275J0H under both routes, and we ask every new customer to confirm which one before we schedule the heat, because the two are not interchangeable on a drawing that calls out a specific standard:

  • EN 10210 (hot-finished): the section is formed and heat-treated while still hot, which relieves the cold-work strain built up during forming. This is the route most commonly specified where the design has already accounted for through-thickness properties without a cold-forming discount.
  • EN 10219 (cold-formed): the section is formed at room temperature from strip or plate, then welded. It is the faster, lower-cost route for most standard building sizes, and it is what the majority of S275J0H orders we fill actually turn out to be.

If your specification simply says "S275J0H, EN 1090 compliant" without naming 10210 or 10219, tell us your fabricator's welding procedure and structural class - we will confirm the correct route rather than default to one.

What Sizes and Finishes Do We Currently Run in S275J0H?

  • Square (SHS): 20x20mm up to 500x500mm
  • Rectangular (RHS): 20x10mm up to 600x400mm
  • Circular (CHS): 21.3mm up to 610mm OD
  • Wall thickness: 2mm to 25mm across the above range, subject to the standard's own dimensional limits
  • Standard lengths: 6m and 12m, random or fixed lengths on request
  • Finish options: black (mill), hot-dip galvanized, or primer-painted on the same S275J0H core material

Larger or non-standard combinations are produced against confirmed drawings - ask us before assuming a size is off our list.

How Do We Verify Impact Toughness on Every Heat?

Because J0H is a tested property, not just a chemistry target, we do not treat the impact requirement as a paperwork formality:

  1. Coil/plate sourced to a fine-grain practice with the manganese and carbon content controlled to keep the carbon equivalent value low enough for site welding without preheat in most section thicknesses.
  2. Charpy V-notch testing at 0 degC, taken from production-representative samples per heat/batch, not from a single reference coil.
  3. Full-length seam inspection on welded (EN 10219) product before cutting to length.
  4. Post-weld normalizing on the EN 10210 hot-finished route, which is what actually earns the "hot-finished" designation rather than just a hot-forming step.
  5. Mill test certificates issued per batch, traceable back to the coil or billet heat number.

Why the Certificate Type Matters More Than the Grade Name

This is the point most buyers ordering for EU structural projects get wrong, and it is worth flagging plainly: EN 1090-2 Table 1 requires a 3.1 inspection certificate (per EN 10204) for structural steel above S275 nominal strength used under CE marking - and depending on the execution class and application, S275 material itself can also require 3.1 rather than the lighter 2.2 certificate. A 2.2 certificate is a manufacturer's test report; a 3.1 certificate carries third-party validation by an accredited body and is what most EN 1090 fabricators need on file before they can weld the material into a CE-marked structure.

We issue 3.1 certificates on request for S275J0H under both EN 10210 and EN 10219 - but if your order doesn't specify it, our default paperwork is the 2.2 report, which will not clear an EN 1090 audit.

FAQ

Q: Can you supply the same order partly in EN 10210 and partly EN 10219?

A: Yes, if the drawing calls for it, but we ship them under separate certificates and separate batch numbers - they are not blended into a single test report even if the chemistry target is identical.

Q: What is your minimum order quantity for S275J0H?

A: It depends on the section size and finish combination; smaller custom sizes typically run against a single production batch, so contact us with your size list and we will confirm the minimum tonnage for that specific run.

Q: Do you galvanize S275J0H in-house or send it out?

A: Both are available - we can quote either mill-black material for your own coating line, or hot-dip galvanized to EN ISO 1461 finished at our facility.

Q: How long does a typical S275J0H order take from confirmation to shipment?

A: Standard sizes from stock-length coil usually ship faster than custom sizes requiring a dedicated roll change; give us your size, tonnage, and certificate requirement and we will quote a firm lead time rather than a general range.
