S275 Circular Hollow Section For Structural Engineering
Details
Among the three structural hollow section shapes, Circular Hollow Section (CHS) is the only one with true rotational symmetry - not just two axes of equal stiffness like a square, but an infinite number. For structures where load direction isn't fixed or fully predictable - towers, masts, offshore members, tubular trusses - that property changes how the member actually performs, not just how it looks. Here's how we manufacture S275 CHS, and where the shape earns its place over square or open sections.

Why Does True Rotational Symmetry Matter More Than Biaxial Symmetry?

A Square Hollow Section has equal stiffness about two axes (X and Y). A Circular Hollow Section has equal stiffness about every axis simultaneously - there is no direction from which the member behaves any differently than from any other. For a member under a genuinely omnidirectional or unpredictable load case, this isn't a marginal improvement over SHS, it's a different category of behavior:

  • Guyed and lattice towers, where wind can load the structure from 360 degrees and cable tension pulls at varying angles as the wind direction shifts
  • Offshore and marine structural members, subject to wave and current loading that changes direction with tide and sea state
  • Tubular truss chords and bracing, where node geometry at multi-member joints doesn't align load with any single principal axis

CHS also delivers the best radius of gyration per unit of cross-sectional area of any common structural shape. In practical terms, that means for a given axial compression load and unbraced length, a CHS member can be lighter than an equivalent SHS or open section while meeting the same slenderness (buckling) limit - or the same weight of CHS can span a longer unbraced length before buckling governs. This is the specific reason CHS dominates in long-span bracing and mast design where minimizing self-weight matters.

The Trade-Off Buyers Need to Plan For: Connection Complexity

CHS's efficiency comes with a real fabrication cost that we tell buyers about upfront rather than letting them discover it at shop-drawing stage: connecting a round tube to another round tube, or to a flat gusset plate, requires a profiled (saddle-cut) end, not a simple straight or mitred cut. Square and rectangular sections connect to flat plates and to each other with straight cuts and standard welds; CHS nodes need the tube end shaped to match the curvature of whatever it's meeting.

For projects with many repetitive node connections at the same angle (a standard lattice tower panel, for example), this is a one-time tooling cost that amortizes well. For projects with many unique node angles, it adds real fabrication hours per joint. We flag this early so your fabricator can plan cutting method (CNC profiling vs. manual) and node count before committing to CHS across an entire structure - and can quote or supply pre-profiled tube ends on request.

What Do We Supply?

Parameter Range We Run
Outside diameter 21.3 mm to 630 mm
Wall thickness 2.0 mm to 40 mm
Standard lengths 6 m / 12 m (custom lengths on request)
Grade S275JR / S275J0 / S275J2
Process route Hot-finished (EN 10210) or cold-formed (EN 10219) - buyer's choice by application
Finish Black (mill), hot-dip galvanized, or primer/paint system
End preparation Straight cut standard; profiled (saddle) cuts available for node-specific orders

Hot-finished S275 CHS carries residual stress relief from the normalizing step, which matters more for CHS than for SHS/RHS because circular members in towers and masts are frequently loaded near their full buckling capacity - a condition where residual stress has a proportionally larger effect on real-world capacity than it does in lightly loaded secondary framing. For applications where buckling governs the design, we default to recommending hot-finished unless the buyer specifically needs cold-formed for cost or lead-time reasons.

How Do We Verify Roundness and Wall Uniformity?

CHS's structural advantage depends on the section actually being round and the wall thickness actually being uniform around the circumference - an out-of-round or eccentric-wall tube loses the very property it's specified for. Our production control includes:

  1. In-line diameter gauging at multiple points around the circumference, not a single-point check
  2. Ovality measurement against tolerance on every length, critical for members going into welded node connections where fit-up gaps translate directly into weld quality
  3. Ultrasonic wall thickness scanning to catch eccentric wall condition from the forming process, not just average wall thickness
  4. Full-length straightness check, since camber on a long CHS chord member compounds visibly at multi-panel truss assembly

A Real Example: Replacing SHS Bracing With CHS on a Lattice Structure

SHS diagonal bracing, sized for the worst-case wind direction from the governing load case. When the final wind analysis modeled load from multiple compass directions rather than a single worst case, the SHS bracing's weak-diagonal capacity (the section's stiffness measured across its corner rather than its face) came in roughly 12% below what the multi-directional case required, forcing an upsize.

Re-running the same bracing in 139.7 mm OD x 6 mm wall S275 CHS met the full multi-directional load case at the original member weight, because CHS capacity doesn't vary with load direction the way SHS's does across its diagonal. The section swap avoided a full upsize across 86 diagonal members, saving an estimated 1.4 tonnes of steel on that structure section alone, at the cost of adding saddle-cut profiling to each node - a fabrication step the tower's repetitive panel geometry made cheap to tool up for.

FAQ

Q: Is hot-finished or cold-formed CHS better for tower and mast bracing?

A: Hot-finished (EN 10210) is generally preferred where members approach their buckling capacity, since the normalizing step removes cold-forming residual stress that reduces effective buckling resistance. Cold-formed (EN 10219) is a valid and more cost-effective choice where members run well below capacity or where lead time is the priority.

Q: Can you supply CHS with saddle-cut ends ready for node welding?

A: Yes, on repetitive-angle node designs we can pre-profile tube ends to your node geometry before shipment, reducing on-site or in-shop fabrication time - send us your node angle and we'll quote profiling alongside the base material.

Q: How does CHS wall thickness tolerance compare between hot-finished and cold-formed product?

A: Both process routes are held to tight wall uniformity control on our line; the practical difference buyers should plan for is that hot-finished product typically runs a slightly heavier minimum wall for the same nominal size due to the hot-forming process, which we'll confirm against your specific OD/wall combination at quotation.

Q: Do you supply mill certificates showing ovality and straightness results, not just chemistry and mechanicals?

A: Yes - dimensional test results including ovality and straightness are included on request alongside standard chemical and mechanical mill test certificates, particularly useful for buyers submitting to third-party structural inspection.
