What "Bare" Means on Our SAWL Pipe

If you will blast and coat the pipe, tell us and we deliver it bare and un-oiled. Oil and varnish both have to be removed before blasting, so skipping them saves your coater a cleaning step.
What We Control on Bare SAWL Pipe
A coater or fabricator notices geometry before anything else. On bare pipe we control:
- Roundness and diameter after cold expansion, so pipe runs true through coating-line rollers and fits end to end
- Straightness, so heavy pipe sits flat in blasting and coating cradles
- Weld seam dressing: the weld cap is blended to a smooth profile, so blasting and coating work over the seam without thin spots
- Internal weld bead: height controlled to the specification and ground flush on request for lining or pigging
- Surface imperfections: slivers, spatter and sharp edges ground out before dispatch
- End preparation: square cuts or bevels to your drawing, with bevel faces protected
- Marking: pipe number, heat number and seam position on every pipe
Why Does Rust Grade Matter on Bare Pipe?
Bare steel starts to rust the moment it is exposed to damp air. The question is how far it goes before blasting. ISO 8501-1 describes the starting condition in four grades:

We pack bare pipe on timber bearers with end caps, so it reaches you in grade A or B. If it will wait outdoors for months, ask for the lightly oiled condition instead.

Case: 96 Pipes, OD 914 x 12.7 mm, Straight to Blast
A coating contractor ordered 96 pipes, OD 914 mm x 12.7 mm wall, 12 m each (1,152 m) for external 3LPE. Their previous lot arrived varnished, and the varnish had to be solvent-washed off before blasting. That added three working days to the schedule for the lot.
We delivered the new lot bare and un-oiled, with weld caps blended and ends bevelled. All 96 pipes went straight to the blast line on arrival, with no pre-cleaning day.

Q: Is bare pipe the same as black pipe?
A: For SAWL pipe, they are close. Bare means no applied coating. Black usually means the same mill surface, often with a light oil film. Tell us which you need.
Q: Can my coater galvanize bare SAWL pipe?
A: Yes, if the bath is large enough. Large diameters and 12 m lengths may need double dipping, so confirm the bath size first.
Q: Can you apply rust-preventive oil for long storage?
A: Yes. We can supply bare pipe with a light oil film, but note it has to be removed before coating.
