Surface Treatments We Supply on LSAW Pipe
| Treatment | Where It Fits | Note | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bare / oiled | Pipe you will blast, coat or paint yourself | Lowest cost, short storage only | |
| Varnish / shop primer | Above-ground pipe, temporary protection | Not a long-term buried coating | |
| FBE (single-layer fusion bonded epoxy) | Buried pipelines, hot-bend and cathodic-protected lines | Thin, hard film with strong steel adhesion | |
| 3LPE (epoxy, adhesive, polyethylene) | Buried oil, gas and water lines, rocky or mixed backfill | Adds mechanical protection to the epoxy layer | |
| 3LPP (epoxy, adhesive, polypropylene) | Higher-temperature buried service | Higher temperature window than PE | |
| Epoxy coal tar / liquid epoxy (external) | Marine, splash-zone and field-coated structures | Thick film for wet, aggressive exposure | |
| Liquid epoxy lining (internal) | Water and fluid transmission | Smoother bore, interior protection | |
| Cement mortar lining (internal) | Potable and raw water mains | Alkaline passive layer on the steel surface |
Which Treatment Fits Your Exposure?
| Exposure | What We Usually Recommend | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Buried, wet or aggressive soil | 3LPE | Barrier layer plus impact and abrasion resistance |
| Buried, rocky backfill or HDD pull | Heavy-duty 3LPE, or FBE with abrasion-resistant overcoat | The coating must survive installation, not only service |
| Buried, elevated temperature | 3LPP, or a high-temperature FBE grade | Polyethylene softens sooner than polypropylene |
| Tidal and splash zone | Epoxy coal tar or heavy-duty epoxy, with extra thickness | The splash zone corrodes fastest |
| Above ground, industrial air | Blast, epoxy primer and topcoat | Repaintable and easy to inspect |
| Water pipeline interior | Liquid epoxy or cement mortar lining | Interior protection and sustained flow |
| Pipe to be coated later by you | Bare or oiled | Avoids stripping a coating you do not need |
Operating temperature, soil resistivity and the cathodic protection design all matter. Tell us these three and we will narrow the list.
Preparation Is Common to Every Coating System
Every coating system on this page depends on the surface under it. Before any coating goes on, we:
- Blast clean the steel to Sa 2.5 (ISO 8501-1) with a controlled surface profile
- Check for soluble salts and dust on the blasted surface
- Grind out slivers, spatter and sharp edges that would pierce a thin film
- Preheat to the application temperature for the chosen system
Skip any of these and the coating can look fine at the factory and disbond in the ground.
What Changes When the Pipe Is LSAW?
Three features of LSAW pipe need attention that a seamless or ERW pipe does not:
- The weld bead. The seam stands proud of the pipe surface. We blend the weld cap into a smooth profile, so the coating bridges it without thinning.
- Heavy walls. Thick LSAW pipe holds heat longer, so we set heating and line speed by wall thickness rather than running one setting for all.
- The cutback. The bare end is left clean and square for girth welding, with a 150 mm default cutback and a protected bevel.
How Do We Inspect Coated LSAW Pipe?
| Check | Coverage | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Coating thickness | Every pipe, multiple positions | Confirms film build, including over the seam |
| Holiday detection | 100% of pipe length | Finds pinholes and thin spots |
| Adhesion / peel | Sampled per lot | Confirms bond to steel |
| Cathodic disbondment | Per qualification and lot as specified | Shows behavior with cathodic protection |
| Impact and flexibility | Sampled per lot | Shows damage resistance |
Test criteria follow the specification you name, such as ISO 21809-1, ISO 21809-2 or DIN 30670.
Internal Lining: Flow and Interior Protection
For water and fluid lines, the inside surface matters as much as the outside.
- Liquid epoxy lining keeps the bore smooth, which helps the pipe hold its flow capacity over the years.
- Cement mortar lining is the long-standing choice for potable and raw water, where the alkaline layer protects the steel.
Inside and outside treatments can be combined on one pipe, for example 3LPE outside with epoxy lining inside.
FAQ
Q: Can one pipe carry different treatments outside and inside?
A: Yes. A typical pairing is 3LPE or FBE outside with epoxy or cement mortar lining inside.
Q: Can you leave longer bare ends?
A: Yes. We cut back 150 mm as standard and can adjust to your welding procedure.
Q: Can you supply field joint coating materials?
A: Yes. We can supply field joint sleeves or liquid epoxy kits matched to the coating on your pipe.
