How Does Wall Thickness Change the Product?

8 - 16 mm: pipeline and structural service where weight matters and the pipe is mainly under internal pressure or axial load.
16 - 30 mm: piling, bridge foundations and heavy structural columns, where the pipe takes driving force and lateral load.
30 - 60 mm: offshore tubulars and deep foundations, where the wall carries bending and fatigue loading. Heavier walls call for plate-level toughness testing, which we quote with the order.

The Ratio That Decides Roundness: Diameter-to-Wall (D/t)

Two pipes with the same diameter can behave very differently if the wall differs. A high D/t ratio means a thin wall on a large diameter, which is harder to form round and easier to deform in handling and storage. A lower D/t gives a pipe that stays round through stacking, lifting and welding.

We review D/t on every enquiry. If your drawing has a very high ratio, we say so before production, not after delivery.

Non-Standard Diameters Are Not a Problem

Because we form plate, we are not tied to a fixed diameter series. We can roll a diameter between inch-based and metric sizes when your drawing calls for it, such as a pile OD set by an existing casing or a sleeve OD set by an existing pile. State the OD and tolerance you need, and we measure circumference on every pipe to confirm it.

What Lengths and End Preparation Do We Offer?

6 - 12 m single pieces, with longer strings built by circumferential welding.
Cut-to-length orders for repeated spans.
Square-cut or bevelled ends to your weld procedure, with internal tapers for wall transitions on request.
Marked pipes, showing pipe number, heat number and wall thickness, so your crew can lay out the string without checking each piece.

Project Example: OD 1,420 mm, Wall Moved from 14 mm to 16 mm

A pipeline contractor drew OD 1,420 mm x 14 mm for a trunk line. That is a D/t ratio of about 101. After our review, the design engineer moved the wall to 16 mm, which brought D/t down to about 89 and added about 14 % to the weight per metre.

The pipes arrived round enough to fit up without field re-rounding across 38 girth joints. The contractor accepted the added steel as the cheaper path compared with a re-rounding crew on site. Your own numbers will differ, but the check is the same: confirm D/t before you freeze the wall.
