LSAW Pipe For Offshore Engineering
Details
We manufacture LSAW (longitudinal submerged arc welded) steel pipe for offshore engineering: jacket legs and braces, conductor and caisson tubulars, pile sleeves, platform supports and offshore foundation members. Each pipe is formed from a single steel plate by the JCOE process and welded with double-sided submerged arc welding along one straight seam. Offshore structures see wave loading, cyclic stress and low service temperatures, so we build and document every pipe around plate toughness, seam quality and dimensional accuracy, not just around diameter and wall.

Why Do Offshore Designers Specify LSAW Pipe?

  • Wall and diameter that tubular joints need. Heavy walls up to 50 mm are rolled from plate, so thick chord and leg members do not depend on a seamless mill's size ceiling.
  • Plate quality chosen for the job. Toughness, strength level and through-thickness behaviour come from the plate you specify, and we keep that plate traceable to each pipe.
  • A single straight seam. One longitudinal weld, placed and inspected where you want it, instead of a helical weld running across the pipe.
  • Large diameters in one piece. Fewer girth welds in the water and on the yard floor.

How Do We Select and Control the Plate?

Offshore performance starts with the steel plate, so we start there. Impact toughness is verified at the design temperature in your specification, on base metal and on the weld. Where the joint design loads the wall in the thickness direction, we can supply plate with through-thickness (Z-direction) quality on request. Every pipe carries a heat number that links back to the plate certificate, so your inspector can follow a stencil on the pipe to a test record.

Seams Built for Fatigue-Sensitive Details

Fatigue cracks start at weld toes and surface imperfections, so we pay attention to the seam:

  • Seam position marked on each pipe, so cans can be assembled with seams staggered as your fabrication specification requires.
  • Flush-ground seam finish at the pipe ends, or along the full length where the detail calls for it.
  • Full-length seam inspection by ultrasonic and radiographic methods, with records filed against the pipe number.

Where Is LSAW Pipe Used Offshore?

  • Jacket legs, braces and risers for fixed platforms
  • Conductor pipes and caissons for wellhead structures
  • Pile sleeves, guide tubes and skirt pile members
  • Topside support columns and heavy module legs
  • Jacket-type foundations for offshore wind
  • Jetties, trestles and subsea structure frames

Project Example: 24 Can Joints, About 60 Fewer Fit-Up Hours

A fabrication yard was building a wellhead platform jacket from OD 1,219 mm x 38 mm leg cans, 12 m long, with 24 can-to-can girth joints. On a previous order, roundness variation forced the crew to pull each joint into line, costing about 3 hours per joint.

On this order we supplied cans with circumference-measured ODs, ovality held within 0.5 %, and sized ends. Fit-up dropped to about 0.5 hour per joint, which saved roughly 60 hours across the 24 joints, and the seam marks let the yard stagger seams without re-measuring.

FAQ

Q: What is the heaviest wall you can supply for offshore tubulars?

A: We roll plate up to 50 mm wall. For heavier members, send the member list and we will check what we can route for you.

Q: Can you supply pipe to API 2B or EN 10225 requirements?

A: Tell us the specification in your tender and the plate grades it calls for. We review it against our process and answer clause by clause.

Q: Can you supply Z-quality plate pipe?

A: Yes, on request. State the Z grade at enquiry so we can select and test the plate to it.

Q: Do you witness testing with a third-party inspector?

A: Yes. Inspectors from your nominated agency can witness tests and final inspection, and we issue 3.2 certificates on request.
