What Is FBE Coated SAWL Pipe?

FBE coated LSAW pipe is a longitudinal submerged arc welded steel pipe protected by an external Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) coating system.

FBE, or Fusion Bonded Epoxy, is a thermoset epoxy coating applied to a properly prepared and heated steel surface. During the coating process, epoxy powder melts, flows and cures to form a continuous protective layer that is strongly bonded to the steel substrate.

FBE coated LSAW pipe is particularly suitable for pipeline projects where strong adhesion, corrosion protection, installation flexibility and resistance to demanding construction conditions are important.

Typical applications include:

  • Rocky soil pipelines
  • Rock trench pipeline sections
  • River crossing pipelines
  • Road crossing pipelines
  • Above-ground pipelines
  • Exposed pipelines
  • Industrial pipelines
  • Oil and gas transmission pipelines
  • Water transmission pipelines
  • Pipeline repair and rehabilitation projects

FBE Coating Structure: Single-Layer and Dual-Layer FBE

FBE coated steel pipe can be supplied with either a single-layer FBE system or a dual-layer FBE system, depending on the application and project requirements.

Single-Layer FBE Coating

The FBE coating provides:

  • Corrosion protection
  • Strong adhesion to steel
  • Electrical insulation
  • Resistance to moisture
  • Resistance to cathodic disbondment
  • Protection against the external environment
  • Single-layer FBE is widely used when strong adhesion and corrosion protection are the primary coating requirements.

The current ISO 21809-2:2026 specifically addresses single-layer FBE coatings for buried or submerged pipeline transportation systems.

Dual-Layer FBE Coating

For more demanding installation conditions, a dual-layer FBE system can be considered.

A typical dual-layer configuration may include: Steel Pipe → FBE Primer → Abrasion-Resistant FBE

  • The first FBE layer provides corrosion protection and adhesion to the steel substrate.
  • The second FBE layer is formulated to provide enhanced resistance to mechanical damage, abrasion and installation-related stresses.

This type of coating can be particularly useful when the pipeline is exposed to:

  • Rocky soil
  • Abrasive backfill
  • Difficult trench conditions
  • Pipe handling
  • Pulling during installation
  • River crossings
  • Road crossings
  • Directional drilling or other demanding installation conditions

FBE vs 3PE: What Is the Difference?

The answer depends primarily on the installation environment and required mechanical protection.

FBE is primarily an epoxy-based corrosion protection system.

Its major strengths include:

  • Strong adhesion
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Good resistance to cathodic disbondment
  • Relatively thin coating
  • Good adaptability to certain pipeline configurations
  • Suitable for selected above-ground and buried applications

3PE is a multilayer coating system combining FBE, adhesive and polyethylene.

Its major strengths include:

  • Corrosion protection
  • Strong mechanical protection
  • Resistance to impact
  • Resistance to abrasion
  • Moisture protection
  • Suitable for many buried pipelines

Therefore:

  • FBE focuses strongly on adhesion and corrosion protection.
  • 3PE combines corrosion protection with a thicker mechanical and moisture barrier.

FBE vs 3PE Application Comparison

Application FBE 3PE
General buried pipeline Suitable depending on specification Widely used
Rocky soil Suitable with appropriate system Strong option
Severe abrasion Dual-layer FBE may be considered Strong mechanical protection
River crossing Suitable depending on installation method Suitable
Above-ground pipe Often suitable Usually unnecessary unless specified
Strong steel adhesion Excellent Excellent through FBE primer
Mechanical protection Moderate to high depending on system High
Moisture barrier Good Very good
Coating thickness Relatively thin Relatively thick
High-temperature service Depends on FBE formulation Depends on PE system
Pipeline repair Often practical More complex
High mechanical handling loads System dependent Strong option
