What Is 3PP Coated SAWL Pipe?

3PP coated SAWL pipe is a longitudinal submerged arc welded steel pipe protected with a three-layer polypropylene external coating system.

LSAW stands for Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding. LSAW pipes are commonly used for large-diameter and high-strength pipeline applications because they can be manufactured with controlled dimensional accuracy and suitable wall thicknesses for demanding transmission systems.

Typical 3PP coating structure

Steel Pipe → FBE Primer → Copolymer Adhesive → Polypropylene Outer Layer

Coating Layer Material Primary Function
First Layer FBE Corrosion protection and adhesion to steel
Second Layer Copolymer Adhesive Bonding between FBE and PP
Third Layer Polypropylene (PP) High-temperature and mechanical protection

3PP vs 3PE: What Is the Biggest Difference?

The most important difference between 3PP and 3PE coating is the performance of their thermoplastic outer layers.

  • 3PE uses polyethylene (PE) as the outer protective layer.
  • 3PP uses polypropylene (PP) as the outer protective layer.

Typical Temperature Range of 3PE and 3PP

Coating Property 3PE (Three-Layer Polyethylene) 3PP (Three-Layer Polypropylene)
Minimum Operating Temp. -40°C (Excellent low-temp flexibility) -20°C (Becomes brittle in extreme cold)
Maximum Operating Temp. +60°C to +80°C (Peaks at 85°C) +80°C to +110°C (High-temp fluids)
Best Suited For... Standard oil, gas, and water lines Hot oil, steam condensate, and district heating

3PE vs 3PP at a glance

Characteristic 3PE Coating 3PP Coating
Outer layer Polyethylene (PE) Polypropylene (PP)
Corrosion protection Excellent Excellent
Mechanical protection Excellent Excellent
Temperature resistance Good Higher
High-temperature application Limited by PE system Better suited
Hot oil pipeline Project dependent Particularly suitable
High-temperature buried pipeline Project dependent Commonly considered
Geothermal applications Application dependent Suitable for selected high-temperature conditions
Middle East high-temperature oilfield Common for moderate temperatures Strong option for higher temperatures

  • The key advantage of polypropylene is its higher temperature capability compared with conventional polyethylene coating systems.

  • This makes 3PP a strong candidate for applications where pipeline operating temperatures exceed the practical temperature range of a conventional 3PE system.

Why Is 3PP More Suitable for High-Temperature Pipelines?

Polypropylene has a higher melting point and higher service-temperature capability than conventional polyethylene. This provides 3PP with an important advantage when the external coating is exposed to elevated pipeline temperatures for long periods.

For buried pipelines, the coating can be exposed to:

  • Continuous operating temperature
  • Short-term temperature peaks
  • Thermal cycling
  • Soil temperature changes
  • Heat transfer from the transported medium
  • Mechanical stress caused by thermal expansion and contraction

At elevated temperatures, the coating material must maintain adequate:

  • Adhesion
  • Mechanical strength
  • Dimensional stability
  • Resistance to deformation
  • Resistance to disbondment
  • Long-term coating integrity

3PP for Middle East High-Temperature Oilfields

Oilfield and pipeline projects in Middle East such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iraq and Oman can involve:

  • High ambient temperatures
  • High solar radiation
  • Desert soil
  • High soil temperatures
  • Long-distance buried pipelines
  • Crude oil transportation
  • Heavy oil transportation
  • Oilfield gathering systems
  • High-temperature process pipelines

In these environments, coating selection must consider both pipeline operating temperature and external environmental temperature.

For high-temperature oilfield applications  or hot oil pipeline, high temperature buried pipeline, 3PP can be considered when the operating temperature requires a higher-temperature external coating system than conventional 3PE can provide.
