LSAW steel pipe piles are heavy-wall steel pipes manufactured by the longitudinal submerged arc welding (LSAW) process and driven or drilled into the ground to transfer structural loads down to competent soil or bedrock. Formed from thick steel plate that is edge-milled, roll-bent, and welded on both the inside and outside seam, LSAW pipe piles are built to withstand the high driving stresses and bending loads that foundation and marine construction demand.
Unlike ERW pipe, which is limited by coil thickness, LSAW pile pipe can be produced with much heavier wall thickness and larger diameter from steel plate, which is why it is the preferred pipe type for deep foundations, bridge piers, and waterfront structures where load capacity and driveability matter most.

Why LSAW Pipe Is Used for Piling

 

  • Higher wall thickness capability. Steel plate up to 40 mm or more can be formed and welded, giving piles the section strength needed for deep driving and high axial loads.
  • Consistent weld quality. Submerged arc welding on both sides of the seam produces a full-penetration weld with predictable mechanical properties, verified by ultrasonic and/or radiographic testing on every joint.
  • Large diameter range. LSAW piles are commonly available from around 406 mm (16") up to 1,420 mm (56"), covering everything from building foundation piles to large marine dolphins and offshore jacket legs.
  • Driveability. The pipe's straightness, roundness, and consistent wall thickness reduce the risk of buckling or deviation during pile driving compared to fabricated or spiral-welded alternatives.

Minimum yield strength decreases at greater wall thicknesses under EN 10219 - always check the grade table against the actual wall thickness ordered, not just the nominal grade name.
