Hot Formed Structural Hollow Section
Details
We supply hot formed structural hollow sections (hot-finished SHS, RHS and CHS) for structures where uniform properties around the whole section, low-temperature toughness and heavy walls decide the design. These sections are formed at normalizing temperature, so the steel is free of the cold-work stress that a formed corner carries, and the strength and impact values apply to the full profile, corners included.

How Is a Hot Formed Section Different in Service?

  • Same properties in the corners as on the flats. Cold-formed corners are strengthened but also carry residual stress from forming. Hot forming resets the steel, so corner behavior is predictable when welded connections and loads concentrate there.
  • Impact toughness you can specify. Grades such as S355J2H and S355K2H are ordered with Charpy requirements at set temperatures, which suits cold-region steelwork, bridges and outdoor towers.
  • Heavy walls in one piece. Where the design needs 20 mm, 30 mm or 40 mm walls, hot forming reaches thickness that lighter forming routes do not.
  • Stable behavior near welds. Fabricators welding heavy joints, gussets and node connections work with a section whose heat-affected areas are not layered on top of cold-work stress.

How Do We Keep Hot Formed Sections Consistent?

  • Coil and billet control: raw material is checked against its mill certificate, and every bundle carries a heat number.
  • Temperature-controlled forming: the tube is heated through the whole wall and shaped in the normalizing range, so properties are even across the profile.
  • Sizing and straightening: bars are sized and straightened after forming to hold length, straightness and end squareness.
  • Testing by lot: tensile, flattening or bend tests are done per lot, and Charpy impact tests are carried out at the temperature your grade requires.
  • Dimensional check: wall, section size and weight per meter are verified before bundling.

Where Should You Choose Cold Formed Instead?

We are open about the trade-offs. Hot formed sections generally cost more, run to slightly looser dimensional tolerances and have longer lead times than cold formed tube. For ordinary building frames, racking, greenhouses and machinery with lighter walls, we will point you to our cold formed range and save you money. Hot formed earns its place when wall, toughness or corner performance is on the drawing.

Case: How Did a Cold-Climate Project Meet Its Impact Requirement?

A steel structures contractor in Canada needed 160 pieces of 250 x 250 x 12.5 mm SHS in S355J2H, with Charpy impact required at -20 degC. Samples from the buyer's earlier cold-formed supplier failed the impact test on 2 of 12 corner specimens, which delayed the project.

We supplied hot formed sections, and the test lot returned an average Charpy energy of 96 J at -20 degC across 12 specimens, well above the 27 J minimum for the grade. The order was accepted on the first inspection, and the buyer's fabrication started without a re-test.

Which Finishes and Services Can We Add?

  • Black or painted for local coating or site erection
  • Hot-dip galvanized for outdoor and coastal structures
  • Cut-to-length, beveled ends and end plates for ready-to-weld delivery
  • Marked and bundled by size, grade and heat number

Where Are Hot Formed Structural Hollow Sections Used?

  • Bridges, footbridges and heavy-duty walkways
  • Offshore support frames and port structures
  • Cranes, booms and heavy machinery
  • Seismic and cold-region building frames
  • Stadium roofs, towers and node-connected space frames

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is hot formed the same as hot finished?

A: In practice, yes. Both describe sections formed at normalizing temperature to standards such as EN 10210.

Q: Can you certify impact tests at -40 degC?

A:  Please send us the grade and temperature. We will confirm the achievable route and testing plan before quoting.

Q: Can hot formed sections be galvanized?

A: Yes, with vent and drain details agreed before production.

Q: What lead time should I plan for?

A: It depends on size and grade. Send us your list and we will give you a firm schedule with the quotation.
