Structural Hollow Section For Bridges
Details
A bridge is not judged on delivery day. It is judged over decades of traffic, weather and inspection. We manufacture circular (CHS), square (SHS) and rectangular (RHS) structural hollow sections for bridge chords, diagonals, verticals, bracing, handrail posts and pier frames, and we supply them with the test records and inspection access that bridge owners and independent inspectors expect.

Bridge structures we typically supply:

  • Pedestrian and cycle footbridges (truss, arch and portal types)
  • Highway overpass and utility pipe-rack bridges
  • Truss bridge chords, diagonals and bracing
  • Handrail, parapet and sign-gantry members
  • Temporary and modular bridge systems

Which Route Fits Which Bridge Member?

Bridge Member Typical Choice Why
Main truss chords (heavy wall, node zones) Hot-finished CHS/SHS, S355K2H or S460NH Uniform properties around the section, impact grade for cold climates
Diagonals and verticals Cold-formed CHS or SHS Tight dimensions, good economy at moderate wall
Footbridge arch or rafter members Cold-formed or hot-finished CHS Smooth profile, clean appearance
Handrail posts, parapet rails Cold-formed SHS/RHS or CHS, galvanized Light, uniform, durable finish
Pipe-rack / utility bridges Cold-formed RHS/SHS Cost-efficient, easy to bolt or weld

How Do We Match the Impact Grade to Your Lowest Service Temperature?

Toughness is the property bridge reviewers check first. Steel that is fine at +20 degC can behave very differently on a winter night. The letters in the grade tell you the test temperature:

  • J0H: impact tested at 0 degC
  • J2H: impact tested at -20 degC
  • K2H: a higher energy requirement at -20 degC
  • NH/NLH: normalized steels for colder or heavier-wall applications

We confirm the impact grade against the lowest design service temperature and wall thickness stated in your specification, and the test result is reported per heat in the certificate, not copied from a typical value.

What Quality Checks Come With Bridge Members?

  • Per-heat chemistry and mechanical results linked to every tube by heat number
  • Impact test records at the specified temperature
  • Wall thickness checks by ultrasonic measurement at the ends and along the length, so the wall at node zones is the wall you designed
  • Weld seam NDT on welded sections
  • Seam position control: on cold-formed sections we can keep the weld seam away from the node zone and the visible face when requested
  • Third-party witnessed inspection (EN 10204 3.2) when your project or owner requires it, with the inspector welcome in our workshop

Why Does Durability Matter as Much as Strength?

Bridge members stay outdoors for a long time, so coating and interior protection decide maintenance cost.

  • Hot-dip galvanizing for footbridges and handrails, with vent and drain details planned before dipping so zinc covers the inside and outside of the tube.
  • Blast-cleaned and primed members for projects with a full paint system applied by the fabricator.
  • Sealed ends: where your design calls for a closed-box member, we can supply plugged or capped tubes with guidance on end details, which keeps water from collecting inside.
  • Smooth, continuous surface: a hollow section has fewer edges and crevices than a built-up open section, so coating is easier to apply and inspect.

Typical Applications

  • Pedestrian and cycle truss footbridges
  • Arch and portal-type footbridges
  • Road overpass and highway truss members
  • Utility, pipe-rack and conveyor bridges
  • Railway platform and station bridges
  • Handrails, parapets and sign gantries
  • Temporary and modular bridge structures

Case: Two Footbridges, 64 Tubes, and the Inspector Who Caught the Wrong Impact Grade

A fabricator was building two pedestrian truss footbridges, each with a 38 m span, in a region where winter lows reach about -20 degC. The truss used 64 CHS tubes: 168.3x8 chords and 88.9x5 diagonals, about 31 tonnes in total.

The first lot had been bought as S355J0H, tested at 0 degC. When the independent inspector reviewed the certificates against the -20 degC design requirement, the whole lot was returned before fabrication began, and the project lost time.

The fabricator re-ordered from us as S355K2H with impact tests at -20 degC reported per heat, ultrasonic wall checks and a witnessed 3.2 inspection by the inspector's own representative. The documents were accepted at the first submission, and fabrication started on the planned date.

FAQ

Q: Can you supply bridge members with third-party inspection?

A: Yes. We arrange witnessed testing and EN 10204 3.2 certification with the inspection body you name.

Q: Do you profile-cut tube ends for truss nodes?

A: Yes, we can supply saw-cut, bevelled and profile-cut ends according to your node drawings.

Q: Can the hollow sections be galvanized after fabrication?

A: Yes, provided vent and drain holes are designed in. Send the drawings and we will mark the positions.

Q: Is a cold-formed section acceptable for a bridge?

A: For many members it is, depending on wall thickness, load type and your design code. Heavy-wall chords and fatigue-sensitive zones often favour hot-finished sections. Your bridge designer should make the final decision, and we will provide the product data.
