Why Do Hollow Sections Suit Steel Frames So Well?
Closed sections resist twisting. An open I-beam or channel twists easily unless it is braced. A closed hollow section has far higher torsional stiffness, so beams that are not continuously restrained, such as edge beams, canopy beams and mezzanine trimmers, stay stable with fewer ties.
Both axes carry load. SHS and CHS columns have equal stiffness in every direction, which makes them natural frame columns when wind or equipment loads come from more than one side. RHS gives you extra depth in the direction that governs a beam.
Clean surfaces cost less to protect. A hollow section has fewer edges and no re-entrant corners to trap dirt. For the same strength, the exposed surface area is usually smaller than a comparable open section, which helps paint and galvanizing cost.
The finished frame looks tidy. For exposed frames in showrooms, canopies and open-plan interiors, a hollow section needs little or no cladding to look finished.
How Do We Keep Frame Members Matched to Each Other?
Frame fabricators often tell us the problem is not one bad tube. It is that a "150 mm" column, a "150 x 100" beam and a diagonal brace were bought from different sources and do not sit together.
We avoid that by treating a frame order as a family:
- Shared face widths. Where your design pairs a 150 x 150 column with a 150 x 100 beam, we keep the 150 mm faces consistent so the beam end meets the column face directly.
- Consistent corner radius within a size, so welds and bolted cleats seat the same way on every piece.
- One production lot per section size wherever possible, so wall and dimensions do not drift mid-order.
- Per-piece marking with size, grade and heat number, so site crews do not have to guess which tube is a column and which is a beam.
Which Section Fits Which Frame?
| Frame Type | Typical Members | What the Section Is Doing |
|---|---|---|
| Portal frame (workshop, warehouse) | RHS rafters, SHS or RHS columns | Spans open bays; closed section keeps rafters stable between purlins |
| Moment frame (multi-storey) | SHS columns, RHS beams | Equal-axis columns, rigid joints; heavier wall at joint zones |
| Braced frame | CHS or SHS bracing, SHS columns | Round or square braces take tension and compression cleanly |
| Mezzanine / platform | RHS beams, SHS posts | Shallow depth under floor, high torsional stiffness |
| Modular frame units | Thin-wall SHS/RHS | Light, uniform members that suit repeat fabrication |
| Equipment frame | Hot-finished SHS/RHS | Thick wall, uniform properties around the section |
What Surface Options Do We Offer for Frame Members?
- Black / oiled: for frames to be shot-blasted and coated by the fabricator.
- Painted: factory primer or finish coat for indoor frames and faster site turnaround.
- Hot-dip galvanized: for outdoor frames, coastal sites and canopies. We arrange galvanizing with the correct vent and drain details, so zinc flows through the section rather than being trapped.
Typical Applications
- Industrial workshops and warehouses
- Commercial and office steel frames
- Agricultural and livestock buildings
- Mezzanine floors and platforms
- Carports, canopies and exposed architectural frames
- Prefabricated modular buildings
- Machine and conveyor support frames
FAQ
Q: Can hollow section replace I-beams or channels in my frame design?
A: Often yes, especially where torsion, appearance or two-way column loading matters. Section sizes should be checked by your structural engineer, and we can supply equivalent hollow sizes for comparison.
Q: Do you cut, drill and prepare members for assembly?
A: Yes. We offer saw cutting to length, hole drilling and end-plate welding, so members arrive ready for assembly.
Q: Which grade is best for a frame in a windy or seismic area?
A: S355J2H is a common choice for its strength and impact grade, but the final choice depends on your design code and local requirements. We can supply the grade stated in your specification.
Q: Can the frame be galvanized after fabrication?
A: Yes. Vent and drain holes should be positioned before galvanizing; send your drawings and we will mark the correct locations.
