We manufacture S460 square hollow section (SHS) for columns, transfer members and frames that carry heavy loads. The section is supplied in two production routes:

• S460MH / S460NLH to EN 10219: cold-formed, welded, thermomechanically rolled steel
• S460NH / S460NLH to EN 10210: hot-finished, normalized

S460 means a minimum yield strength of 460 MPa (the standard lowers the guaranteed value for thicker walls). Compared with S355 SHS, you can carry the same axial load with a smaller section or a lighter wall, or carry a higher load in the same footprint.

This page covers what matters when an SHS is used as a heavy-load column: how we prepare the ends, control the geometry and deliver sections that go together on site without shimming.

Not every size and wall is available in both routes. Send us your section and we will confirm which route produces it.

Equal stiffness in both directions. A square section has no weak axis. You do not have to orient it, and it does not matter which way it is stood on the base plate.

One buckling behavior, easy to design. Because both axes are the same, column checks are simpler and results are consistent for every column in the schedule.

Compact footprint. With S460, a heavy-load column can be 50 mm or more narrower on each side than the S355 equivalent. On car parks, warehouses and podium levels, that is usable floor and clear width.

Four flat faces for connections. Beam end plates, gusset plates, brackets and cleats land on flat surfaces on all four sides, which suits multi-direction framing at a column node.

Uniform closed section. The closed shape resists torsion far better than an open H-column, which matters when loads are eccentric.

Axial capacity of a short column scales with cross-sectional area multiplied by yield strength. Moving from S355 to S460 raises the yield term by about 30%, so the same load can be carried with less steel area.

That gives you three practical choices:

1. Same size, higher load rating for upgrades and re-use of existing layouts.
2. Smaller size, same load to gain space and reduce weight.
3. Thinner wall, same size to cut steel tonnage and weld volume.

One caution from our side: a thinner wall on a wide face reduces local stability. We recommend keeping the wall thick enough that the section stays in a higher section class for compression. When you send us a size, we can review it against the wall-to-width ratio before quotation, and your engineer keeps the final design decision.

On heavy columns, the ends are where a section either goes together in minutes or costs a day of shimming. This is where we put extra attention:

• Saw-cut, square ends. Ends are cut by band or circular saw, not flame or plasma, so faces are flat and perpendicular to the tube axis. We target end squareness within about 1 mm across a 400 mm face.
• Full contact for end-bearing splices. Flat, square ends let two column lengths bear against each other, so load passes through steel-to-steel contact rather than only through the weld.
• Bevelled ends for full-penetration welds. Single or double bevel to your weld procedure, with root face and angle as specified.
• End plates and base plates. We can weld plates to your drawing, with the weld inspected before packing.
• Drilled holes. Bolt holes, lifting holes and vent or grout holes drilled to drawing.
• Length control. Cut-to-length with tolerance agreed at order, and a tag on every piece with mark number, heat number and size.

Yes. Concrete-filled square tube columns are common for very heavy loads and for fire resistance, and we prepare sections for that use:

• Clean bore: interior free of oil residue, loose scale and debris, on request
• Grout and vent holes drilled at the positions you specify
• Internal weld flash handled to the level you specify for pumped or poured concrete
• Matched end preparation so filled columns still splice with full bearing
