Why Do Designers and Fabricators Choose S275 Instead of S355?
A higher grade is not always the better choice. Buyers who pick S275 usually have one of these reasons:
- The design is governed by stiffness, not strength. Steel's stiffness (modulus of elasticity) is about the same in S275 and S355, so a beam limited by deflection deflects the same in either grade. Paying for higher yield strength does not reduce the deflection.
- The connection or buckling governs. Many light frames are limited by joints or slenderness, where the extra yield of S355 is never used.
- Fabrication is easier. S275 has a lower strength level, which generally means easier cutting, drilling, bending and welding in a normal workshop.
- The price per tonne is lower, and for tonnage-heavy projects, the saving adds up.
If your engineer's calculation shows that strength governs, we will quote S355 instead. We supply both, so we have no reason to steer you toward the wrong grade.
Which Standard Should the S275 Hollow Section Follow?
- EN 10219 (cold-formed) is our most common route for SHS and RHS in building, platform and machinery work, and it is economical within its size range.
- EN 10210 (hot-finished) is chosen when the design code or the drawing requires it, or for larger and thicker sections.
If your drawing names a standard, we quote that standard. If it only says "S275 hollow section", we will ask a short question and propose the route.
How Do We Check S275 Hollow Section Before Shipment?
- Tensile test (yield, tensile strength, elongation) on samples from each lot
- Impact test for S275J0H and S275J2H at the temperature of your grade
- Dimensional check: outside size, wall thickness, length, squareness, straightness
- Weld seam check by the method the standard requires
- Chemical analysis linked to the heat number on the EN 10204 3.1 certificate
Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TUV or your own inspector can be arranged at our plant.

- Bending and rolling: S275 is a good choice for curved members such as arches and handrails, because its moderate strength makes it easier to form. Tell us the bend radius, and we will check whether the wall and size suit it.
- Galvanizing: S275 hollow sections are commonly hot-dip galvanized. If galvanizing is planned, tell us in advance, so we can check the silicon level of the heat, which affects the coating's appearance and thickness.
- Painting: We can blast and prime the sections at our plant.
