| ASTM A500 | Grade B, Grade C | 290 to 345 MPa (42 to 50 ksi) | Cold formed, welded | ASTM A500 hub |
| ASTM A501 | Grade A, Grade B | 36 and 50 ksi | Hot formed | ASTM A501 hub |
| ASTM A1085 | Grade A | 50 ksi (345 MPa) | Cold formed, tight wall tolerance | ASTM A1085 hub |
| AS/NZS 1163 | C250, C350, C450 | 250, 350, 450 MPa | Cold formed | AS/NZS 1163 hub |
| JIS G3466 | STKR400, STKR490 | 245 and 325 MPa | Cold formed, square and rectangular | JIS G3466 hub |
Yield values drop as wall thickness increases, so we quote the exact figure for your wall band on the mill certificate. Not every grade runs in every size. Tell us the section and wall you need and we confirm the route.
What Do the EN Grade Codes Mean?
An EN designation packs three facts into one code. Take S355J2H:
- S = structural steel
- 355 = minimum yield strength in MPa
- J2 = impact subgrade (27 J at -20 degC)
- H = hollow section
That makes every number in the code something you can check on the test certificate, heat by heat.
S235 and S275: Where Do Lower Grades Make Sense?
S235JRH and S275J0H/J2H suit stiffness-governed work, where deflection or the member size limits the design more than strength does. Typical uses are secondary framing, purlin supports, handrails, canopies and light mezzanines. These grades are also easy to bend, cut and weld in an ordinary workshop. See S275 Structural Hollow Section and S275 Rectangular Hollow Section.
S355: Why Is It Our Most Ordered Grade?
S355 is the default for buildings, frames and general structural steelwork. It gives about 50% more yield strength than S235 with good weldability in J0, J2 and K2 subgrades. We supply it in every shape and route: cold formed, hot finished and seamless, and in black, painted or galvanized finish. Start from the S355 range, then branch to S355 Square, S355 Rectangular, S355 Seamless or Hot Dip Galvanized S355. The EN 10219 S355JR page covers the JR entry level.
S420 and S460: When Does High Strength Pay Off?
Choosing S420 or S460 lets the engineer cut wall thickness and tonnage on long spans, tall columns and heavily loaded nodes. We supply the thermomechanically rolled MH and normalized NH/NLH versions. Which one you need depends on the route and standard, covered in S420MH, S420NH, S460MH, S460NH and the existing EN 10210 S460NLH page. One honest note: where stiffness decides the design, higher grade adds cost and no benefit. We will tell you so when your numbers show it.
What Do J0, J2, K2, N and NL Mean for Your Project?
- ASTM A500 Grade B is the common US-standard choice, and Grade C gives higher strength for the same section. See ASTM A500 Gr. B Hollow Structural Section.
- ASTM A501 is the hot-formed option, with uniform properties around the corners.
- ASTM A1085 adds a tighter wall tolerance, a capped yield, and a required impact test. It suits projects that design to the full nominal wall.
For imperial designations and ordering HSS sizes, read Welded Hollow Structural Sections.
AS/NZS 1163 and JIS G3466: Do We Cover Regional Grades?
Yes. For Australia and New Zealand we supply C250, C350 and C450, with L0 impact options. For Japanese-specification work we supply STKR400 and STKR490 square and rectangular tubes. If the contract names a regional standard, we supply and certify to that standard. We do not substitute an EN or ASTM grade without your written approval.
How Does the Production Route Change by Grade?
| Route | Page | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Cold formed | Cold Formed Structural Steel Tube | Light and medium wall, tight dimensions |
| Electric resistance welded | ERW Hollow Section | Coil-based economy |
| Hot finished | Hot Finished Structural Steel Tube | Heavy wall, dynamic load, machining |
| Precision | Precision Structural Hollow Section | Laser cutting and automated lines |
Which Finish Goes With Which Grade?
Any grade can ship black, painted or hot-dip galvanized. For zinc-coated tubes we control the silicon content of the steel so coatings stay bright and even. See Black, Painted and Galvanized structural hollow sections.
Which Application Needs Which Grade?
| Application | Common grades | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial and industrial buildings | S275, S355J0/J2 | For Buildings |
| Portal, braced and modular frames | S355J2 | For Steel Frames |
| Bridges and footbridges | S355K2, S355NH, S460NH | For Bridges |
| Equipment frames, repeated loads | S355J2H hot finished | Heavy Duty |
FAQ
Q: Can you supply two grades in one order?
A: Yes. We bundle and mark each grade separately.
Q: Is S355J2H the same as ASTM A500 Gr. C?
A: No. They are different standards with different test rules, even where strengths look close. Your engineer must approve any swap.
Q: Can I get S355 with a 3.2 certificate?
A: Yes, with third-party witnessing arranged on request.
Q: What grade should I pick if I am unsure?
A: Send us the member schedule, design code and service temperature. We will suggest a grade, and your engineer makes the final call.
