Galvanized ERW Pipe
Details
Galvanized ERW steel pipe is a straight-seam, high-frequency welded carbon steel tube coated with zinc for corrosion protection. We supply two distinct galvanized product types — pre-galvanized (coil galvanized before forming) and post-weld hot-dip galvanized (full pipe dipped after welding) — suited to different environments and applications.

Key Features

  1. Two galvanizing options available: pre-galvanized (ASTM A653-type coating applied to coil before welding) and hot-dip galvanized (ASTM A123-type batch coating applied to the finished pipe after welding)
  2. Hot-dip (post-weld) galvanizing fully coats the weld seam and cut ends - the recommended option for outdoor, buried, coastal, or otherwise corrosive environments
  3. Pre-galvanized pipe offers a cost-effective, uniform coating for indoor and lower-corrosion applications; weld seam touch-up available on request
  4. Coating weight and standard confirmed and documented per order - ask for test data specific to your production lot
  5. Suitable for structural framing, fencing, scaffolding, guardrails, and general fabrication

Coating Comparison

  Pre-Galvanized Hot-Dip Galvanized (Post-Weld)
Standard ASTM A653 (or equivalent) ASTM A123 (or equivalent)
Coating applied To coil, before forming/welding To finished pipe, after welding
Weld seam coverage Requires separate touch-up Fully coated
Best suited for Indoor / moderate climate Outdoor / buried / coastal

Applications

  • Structural framing - building frames, support columns, and load-bearing components in construction where corrosion protection extends service life without upgrading to stainless or alloy steel
  • Fencing and guardrails - highway barriers, boundary fencing, and handrails exposed to weather year-round; hot-dip galvanized pipe is the typical choice here given continuous outdoor exposure
  • Scaffolding - temporary and reusable scaffold tube, where consistent coating quality affects both worker safety and the pipe's reusable service life across projects
  • Greenhouse and agricultural structures - frames exposed to high humidity, fertilizer residue, and irrigation water, all of which accelerate corrosion on uncoated steel
  • Solar mounting and racking structures - outdoor ground-mount and rooftop support structures with long design-life requirements, typically 20–25 years, where coating durability is a direct project cost factor
  • Water and low-pressure fluid conveyance - piping for irrigation, drainage, and non-potable water systems where galvanizing protects against internal and external corrosion
  • General indoor and outdoor fabrication - machinery frames, conveyor supports, and general welded assemblies where either coating type may be suitable depending on the indoor/outdoor exposure

For each application, confirm with us whether pre-galvanized or hot-dip galvanized pipe is the better fit based on your specific exposure conditions - see the coating comparison table above.

FAQ

A: Hot-dip (post-weld) galvanized pipe is generally recommended for outdoor, buried, or coastal applications, since the entire pipe including the weld seam is coated after fabrication.

Q: Is the weld seam protected on pre-galvanized pipe?

A: Not automatically - welding disrupts the coil's zinc coating at the seam. Ask us about weld-seam touch-up (zinc-rich paint or thermal spray) if you're ordering pre-galvanized pipe for outdoor use.

Q: Can I request a specific coating weight?

A: Yes - specify ASTM A653 coating class (e.g., G90) for pre-galvanized, or ASTM A123 minimum coating thickness category for hot-dip galvanized, and we'll confirm against our production capability.

Q: Does cutting or welding the pipe after delivery affect the coating?

A: Yes, for both types - any cutting, welding, or drilling done after delivery will locally remove the zinc coating at that point and should be touched up on-site.
