Dimensional Tolerances Buyers Should Check

 

A500 sets specific tolerance bands that affect fit-up and structural design assumptions:

  • Outside dimension - for round tubing 1.900 in (48.26 mm) OD and smaller, the tolerance is roughly ±0.5%; for larger round sizes, roughly ±0.75%.
  • Wall thickness - generally within about ±10% of the nominal specified value.

 

These tolerances matter most at connection details - end plates, gusset fit-up, and bolt hole clearance - where a tube running at the thin or thick end of its tolerance band can create unexpected clearance or clamping issues on site.

 

A500 vs. Related Specifications

 

Buyers occasionally see A500 grouped with, or confused for, two other standards:

 

  • ASTM A501 - covers hot-formed tubing rather than cold-formed, with different permitted manufacturing routes (seamless, butt-welded, ERW, or SAW) and its own grade structure. It is not a drop-in substitute for A500 unless the project specification allows it.
  • ASTM A1085 - a newer specification developed specifically for HSS, offering a single higher minimum yield strength (50 ksi) applied uniformly across shapes, along with different design-wall-thickness assumptions. Some engineers now specify A1085 where more consistent section properties are desired, so it's worth checking which standard a project actually calls for rather than assuming A500 by default.

 

Choosing a Supplier

 

Because A500 is high-volume and widely available, price competition is common - but that makes it more important, not less, to confirm the basics:

  • Are mill certificates batch-specific, or generic type documentation?
  • Does the supplier stock the specific grade and shape combination your drawings call for, or will it need to be special-ordered?
  • Is there documented quality control on the ERW seam for welded product?
  • Can they confirm which edition of A500/A500M the material was produced to?

 

A supplier who answers these clearly, with paperwork to back it up, is a safer long-term partner than one offering only a lower price with vague documentation.

 

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q:What is the difference between ASTM A500 Grade B and Grade C?

A: Both are common structural grades, but Grade C has higher minimum yield and tensile strength than Grade B (50,000 psi vs. 46,000 psi minimum yield for shaped sections) and slightly lower elongation. Grade C has become the default choice in most current U.S. construction practice due to its wider availability and better strength-to-cost ratio.

Q:Why does the same A500 grade have two different yield strength values?

A: Because square and rectangular tube requires more cold working during forming than round tube, the shaped product strain-hardens further and ends up with a higher minimum yield strength than round tube of the same nominal grade. Always check which value applies to the actual shape you are ordering.

Q: Is ASTM A500 the same as ASTM A501?

A: No. A500 covers cold-formed tubing (seamless or ERW-welded), while A501 covers hot-formed tubing with a broader range of permitted welding processes. They are separate specifications with different grade structures and are not interchangeable unless a project specifically allows either.
