A thin-wall pipe forgives a lot. A 40 mm plate does not. Any lamination, inclusion band or segregation inside the plate stays inside the finished wall, and it is expensive to find after the pipe has been formed and welded.

So we test the plate first:

• 100% ultrasonic testing of the plate body, with a tighter check along the strip that becomes the weld edge, before the plate goes to the press.
• Heat-by-heat chemistry review with carbon equivalent noted for each plate. This sets our welding procedure for that heat.
• Plate-to-pipe traceability. Each pipe carries its plate number and heat number, and these appear on the mill test certificate.

In thick wall pipe, strength at the surface does not guarantee strength at mid-wall. Two points decide this.

Z-direction ductility. Where the pipe will carry load across its thickness, such as at welded nodes, collars and heavy attachments, we can supply Z-quality plate (Z15 / Z25 / Z35 classes per EN 10164). This reduces the risk of lamellar tearing at the joint. Tell us the connection type and we will recommend the class.

Toughness at mid-wall. Thick plate cools more slowly than thin plate, so toughness can drop toward the centre. We test impact specimens from both near-surface and mid-wall positions on thick lots when your specification asks for it.

A thick seam cannot be laid in one or two passes. We use a multi-pass inside and outside SAW sequence with controlled heat input and interpass temperature, so the weld metal and heat-affected zone keep their toughness.

• Bevel geometry is matched to the wall. A deeper wall needs a bevel that gives full fusion at the root without wasting filler.
• Inside and outside passes overlap into each other, which gives a continuous fused seam through the whole thickness.
• Seam checks follow the weld, and the pipe is hydrostatically tested to your specified pressure after cold expansion.

Cold expansion also sets the final diameter and roundness, which matters when you must join pipes end to end on site.

• Piling contractors ask for heavy walls, square-cut ends and bevels ready for field splicing.
