Comparison of Common Seamless Pipe Standards

Standard Primary Scope Grade System
ASTM A53/A53M-24 (Type S) General-purpose, low-pressure fluid/structural (water, gas, low-temp steam) Grade A/B (S: seamless)
ASTM A106/A106M-24 High-temp service (boilers, refineries, power plants) Grade A/B/C (seamless only, killed steel)
API 5L (PSL1/PSL2) Oil/gas transmission pipelines (onshore/offshore) Gr.B, X42–X80 (seamless/welded)

Comparison Notes

  • ASTM A53 vs. A106: A106 is seamless-only for high-temp service; A53 allows welded (ERW) for cost savings in non-critical uses.
  • API 5L PSL1 vs. PSL2: PSL2 adds impact testing, tighter chemistry, and 100% NDT-use for offshore/high-risk pipelines.
  • Impurity control: API 5L PSL2 has the strictest limits on P and S (≤0.030%), followed by A106, while A53 is relatively lenient.
  • Impact toughness: Both A106 and API 5L PSL2 have clear impact requirements, while A53 has no mandatory provisions.
  • Strength limit: Only API 5L PSL2 specifies the upper limits for yield and tensile strength to prevent brittleness risk caused by an excessively high strength-to-yield ratio.
  • High-temperature performance: Because the Si content in A106 is ≥0.10%, its high-temperature oxidation resistance is better than that of A53 and API 5L.

Applicant Field

Application Recommended Standard Key Reason
Low-pressure water/gas lines ASTM A53 Gr.B Cost-effective; seamless optional; hydrotested
High-temp steam pipes (power plants) ASTM A106 Gr.B Killed steel; stress relief; high-temp creep resistance
Oil/gas transmission pipelines API 5L Gr.B PSL2 Strict NDT; impact resistance; corrosion control

Dimensional Tolerances

ASTM A53: OD tolerance ±0.75%; wall thickness ±12.5%.

ASTM A106: Tighter OD ±0.5%; wall thickness ±10% for critical fit.

API 5L: OD ±0.5%; wall thickness ±10% (PSL2); ovality ≤2% of OD.

Testing & Quality Control

Impact testing: Mandatory for ASTM A106 Gr.C, API 5L PSL2; not required for ASTM A53

NDT: API 5L PSL2 require 100% ultrasonic/ radiographic testing; ASTM A53 only for special orders.

Hydrotest pressure: ASTM A53 caps at 2800 psi; API 5L follow design pressure calculations.
