How Should Hot-Dipped Galvanized ASTM A53 ERW Pipe Be Stored?

Hot-dipped galvanized pipes come with reliable anti-corrosion zinc coating. However, poor storage practices may lead to white rust, black discoloration and red rust. Proper management of environment, stacking, handling and protection is required instead of merely stocking them in a warehouse.

Warehouse Environment

Indoor dry and ventilated warehouse is preferred. Keep away from acids, alkalis, salt and other corrosive substances. Control humidity and avoid condensation. If outdoor storage is unavoidable, select high ground with good drainage and fully cover with waterproof tarpaulin. Long-term open-air stacking is not recommended.

The zinc layer on galvanized steel pipe tends to corrode in humid and poorly ventilated environments, forming white or grayish-white corrosion deposits known as "white rust".

Avoid the following conditions during storage:

  • Extended exposure to rain
  • Persistently high humidity
  • Poor air circulation inside the warehouse
  • Residual moisture staying on pipe surfaces

In short, the core principle for galvanized pipe storage is to minimize long-term moisture exposure.

Elevate stacking to prevent water accumulation

Galvanized pipes should not be placed directly on damp ground. It is best to store them elevated with timber blocks, brackets or steel supports.

This method keeps pipes away from ground moisture and facilitates air circulation. Meanwhile, proper drainage must be considered when stacking bundled pipes. Especially for outdoor storage, rainwater trapped inside pipes that cannot drain quickly will create localized humid conditions and accelerate corrosion.

How Should Hot-Dipped Galvanized ASTM A53 ERW Pipe Be Stored

Take rainproof and moisture-proof measures, but avoid full airtight sealing

If galvanized pipes must be stored outdoors, install rain shelters or use suitable covers to stop rainwater from entering pipe bundles.

However, please note that rain protection does not mean complete sealing. If the steel pipes are fully wrapped with plastic sheets, condensation may form inside due to large temperature differences between day and night. Trapped moisture cannot escape timely and will instead raise the risk of white rust.

BLACK SCAFFOLDING PIPE

Prevent damage to galvanized coating during handling and stacking

The zinc coating serves as the anti-corrosion protective layer of steel pipes. Impacts, friction and scratches should be minimized during loading, unloading and transportation.

Points to note:

  • Do not drop pipes directly from height
  • Avoid heavy collisions between pipes
  • Refrain from dragging pipes on the ground
  • Select suitable lifting tools for hoisting
  • Keep sharp objects away to prevent surface scratches

If the galvanized coating suffers obvious damage, the exposed base steel will lose its protective layer, leading to higher corrosion risks.

Avoid chemical contamination and carry out regular inspections

Zinc coatings cannot resist all types of chemical environments. When storing galvanized pipes, keep them away from acids, strong alkalis and other corrosive chemicals. Prevent long-term direct contact with materials that may cause corrosion.

For galvanized pipes kept in inventory for a long period, perform regular inspections and focus on checking the following items:

  • Presence of white rust
  • Presence of red rust
  • Scratches or peeling of the galvanized coating
  • Pipe deformation
  • Water accumulation inside pipe bundles

For slight white rust, improve the storage environment and apply proper treatment. If obvious red rust or large-area coating damage occurs, further inspection of the coating condition is required.

Summary

Storage rules for galvanized pipes can be summarized into five key requirements:

  • Keep dry and well-ventilated; avoid long-term humid conditions.
  • Stack pipes elevated to prevent ground contact and water accumulation.
  • Apply rain and moisture protection while maintaining air circulation.
  • Follow proper handling practices to protect the galvanized coating from damage.
  • Keep away from corrosive substances and inspect stock conditions regularly.
