For ASTM A53 Type E ERW pipe NPS 2 and above, 100% full-length weld seam non-destructive electric examination is mandatory. Acceptable inspection methods include ultrasonic testing (ASTM E273) or eddy current testing (ASTM E309), to capture hidden weld discontinuities such as incomplete fusion and subsurface microcracks.

For overall pressure tightness verification, the standard provides an alternative arrangement: Each pipe shall undergo hydrostatic test, OR a full-body nondestructive electric test may substitute the hydrostatic requirement, by mill option or purchaser agreement. If substituted, the pipe and MTC will be clearly marked "NDE".
