What is a Hot-Dipped Galvanized Steel Pipe?

A hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe is a carbon steel pipe that has been thoroughly cleaned and submerged into a bath of molten zinc at temperatures averaging around 450°C (842°F).

This immersion triggers a metallurgical reaction between the iron in the steel and the molten zinc, forming a series of iron-zinc alloy layers topped by a pure zinc outer layer. Unlike simple paint or electro-galvanized coatings, this multi-layered bond becomes an integral part of the pipe itself, offering rugged physical protection inside and out.

Core International Standards & Steel Grades

To ensure seamless integration into global procurement specifications, our hot-dipped galvanized pipes are manufactured to meet or exceed strict international benchmarks:

  • ASTM A53 / A106 (Grades A & B): The standard American specifications for seamless and welded black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipes.

  • BS 1387 / EN 10255: Widely specified across British and European markets for light, medium, and heavy-gauge threaded steel tubes.

  • Zinc Coating Mass: We guarantee a heavy coating weight (e.g., Z275 to Z500 or higher, ranging from 300 g/m2 to 500 g/m2), translating to a thick, durable protective shell of over 45–70 microns depending on your project needs.

Primary Applications Across Global Industries

Thanks to their versatility and structural reliability, HDG steel pipes are utilized across a vast range of commercial and industrial sectors:

  • Water Supply and Plumbing Systems: Used extensively for municipal water distribution networks and industrial cooling loops because the zinc layer prevents water discoloration and scale buildup.
  • Fire Protection Infrastructure: Highly favored for commercial and industrial fire sprinkler mainlines due to steel's excellent melting point and dependable pressure handling under emergencies.
  • Structural Framing and Fencing: Deployed as structural columns, outdoor scaffolding, highway guardrails, and heavy-duty fence posts where weather endurance is mandatory.
  • Agriculture and Greenhouses: Widely specified for building modern greenhouse frameworks and livestock pens, which are routinely exposed to high humidity and corrosive animal waste environments.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the difference between Hot-Dipped Galvanized (HDG) and Pre-Galvanized steel pipes?

A: Hot-Dipped Galvanized pipes are fabricated first as raw steel tubes and then dipped into molten zinc, resulting in a much thicker zinc coating (typically 45–85 microns) inside and out. They are optimized for heavy-duty outdoor and underground use.Pre-Galvanized pipes are made from steel sheets that were already galvanized at the mill. They have a thinner, smoother zinc layer (usually 15–20 microns) and are better suited for light indoor or ornamental applications.

Q: Can hot-dipped galvanized pipes be threaded and cut in the field?

A: Yes. Our pipes can be ordered with plain ends, beveled ends, or pre-threaded ends (conforming to ANSI B1.20.1 or ISO 7-1) along with galvanized couplings. If you cut or thread the pipes in the field, it is highly recommended to apply a high-purity zinc-rich cold galvanizing spray to the exposed bare steel to restore its corrosion resistance.

Q: Are HDG steel pipes safe for transporting drinking (potable) water?

A: Yes, they are safe and have been used for municipal water transport for decades. The zinc coating utilizes high-purity zinc that complies with international health and safety regulations, ensuring no harmful chemical leaching occurs.

Q: How do you protect HDG pipes from damage during maritime shipping?

A: To prevent physical scratching and white rust (wet storage stain) during international ocean transit, our pipes are tightly packed into secure hexagonal bundles using heavy steel strapping. We apply a protective anti-rust surface passivation treatment and can provide optional waterproof woven outer wrappings or end caps upon request.
