What Does "S420NH" Tell You About How We Make It?
- S = structural steel
- 420 = 420 MPa minimum yield class
- N = normalized (or normalized-formed) delivery condition
- H = hollow section
Hot-finished here means the steel's final metallurgical condition is set by heat, not by cold forming. The section is either made seamless, or made by welding and then normalizing the whole section, not just the seam. This separates it from cold-formed S420MH under EN 10219, and it is the point we check first when buyers ask us to quote "S420".

How Do We Produce S420NH Hot-Finished Sections?
- Steel selection: fine-grain, aluminium-killed steel with chemistry controlled for a 420 MPa normalized result.
- Forming: seamless piercing and rolling, or forming and welding the section.
- Full-section normalizing: the whole section, weld included, is heated to roughly 900 degC and air-cooled, which refines grain and relieves residual stress.
- Sizing and straightening: final shape correction after heat treatment.
- Testing: yield, tensile, elongation and impact tests on the finished, normalized section.
- Weld seam NDT: full-length non-destructive testing on welded sections.
- Marking and certification: grade, size and heat/lot number, with certificate to match.

Why Does the Normalized Condition Matter in Your Workshop?
- Bending and forming: stress-free sections behave predictably when your shop rolls or hot-bends them.
- Heat tolerance: thermal cycles that thermomechanically rolled steel handles poorly, such as stress relieving and hot forming, are far less critical for normalized steel. Your procedure still governs the exact temperatures.
- Corner geometry: sharp corners are formed by heat, not cold work, so there is no cold-worked strain concentrated at the corners.
- Galvanizing: cold-worked corners can be a concern in the zinc bath. A hot-finished section removes that concern.
- Heavy nodes and fatigue: a uniform, stress-free microstructure suits thick-wall joints and repeated loading.
