Why Does Steel Chemistry Affect How the Zinc Looks and Lasts?
Silicon and phosphorus in the steel change how zinc reacts with it. In reactive steels the coating grows thick, rough and dark grey, and in some cases it becomes brittle and can chip at edges and corners.
- We can supply heats with silicon and phosphorus controlled to the range your galvanizer recommends.
- The heat number on the certificate lets you and the galvanizer match chemistry to the coating result.
- For projects where appearance matters, such as visible canopies and architectural frames, a bright, even finish is far easier to achieve with a suitable base steel.
Inside and Outside: How Is a Hollow Section Fully Coated?
A hollow section is protected only if zinc reaches the inside surface too. This needs vent and drain holes:
- Vent holes let air escape as the tube enters the bath, so molten zinc can flow in.
- Drain holes let zinc run out on withdrawal, so no pockets are left.
- Hole positions and sizes depend on the member size and layout. We can drill them to your drawings, or advise positions if your drawings do not show them.
- Sealed tubes without vents are a safety risk in a zinc bath, so we never galvanize a closed tube blind.
How Do We Handle Joints and Weld Zones?
Zinc protects the member, but your joints need care:
- Galvanize after welding wherever possible, so welds are coated too.
- Bolted connections: use hot-dip galvanized bolts and plan hole sizes to allow for the coating.
- Site welding or cutting burns off zinc locally; touch up with a zinc-rich paint or metal spray.
- Handling: we bundle and strap galvanized tubes with spacers or soft protection, so the coating is not scraped.
Case: 96 Tonnes of Galvanized RHS for a Coastal Canopy
A contractor was building a steel canopy structure near the coast, using about 96 tonnes of galvanized RHS and SHS in S355J2H, delivered as 60 bundles.
On an earlier lot from another source, the galvanizer reported 14 of 60 bundles (23%) with a rough, dark-grey, uneven coating, and some pieces needed repair before they could be accepted.
For the new order, we supplied heats with silicon and phosphorus controlled to the range the galvanizer specified, with vent and drain holes drilled to the drawings. After galvanizing, only 2 of 60 bundles (3%) needed minor touch-up, and the canopy went up on schedule.
