Why "Black" Is a Deliberate Spec Choice, Not a Default
On a building structure order, "black" isn't a shortcut for "uncoated because nobody asked for coating" - it's usually the correct spec for a specific reason: the tube is going to be fireproofed, painted, or built into a wall or slab where a protective coating would be wasted money or would actually interfere with the next step. Three situations where black is the right call, not a corner cut:
- Intumescent fireproofing needs bare or lightly primed steel. Most intumescent coatings are formulated and tested for adhesion to blast-cleaned steel or a compatible primer - not to galvanizing. Specifying galvanized tube for a member that's getting fireproofed usually means an extra step to prepare the surface (or a coating failure risk later), so black is the standard default for framing headed to a fireproofing contractor.
- The member will be fully enclosed. Columns inside a wall cavity, beams above a suspended ceiling, or bracing buried in a slab don't need a corrosion coating that nobody will ever see or that will never see weather. Paying for galvanizing on a member with zero long-term moisture exposure is money that doesn't buy anything.
- Field welding of connections is planned. Welding through a galvanized coating releases zinc fumes and burns the coating back from the weld, which then needs local repair. Structural steel with a lot of site-welded moment or brace connections is often ordered black specifically so welders aren't fighting a coating at every joint.
Where black is the wrong call: any member that will be exposed to weather, ground contact, or a humid interior (parking structures, unconditioned mechanical rooms) without a subsequent coating. Confirm the finish schedule before ordering - a black tube installed and never coated corrodes at the ordinary carbon-steel rate for that environment.
Rectangular vs Square for Structural Framing
Rectangular hollow section earns its place over square section whenever a member sees load predominantly in one direction. A rectangular tube oriented with its long side parallel to the bending direction has a higher section modulus about that axis than a square tube of the same weight - which is why RHS shows up so often as:
- Beams and lintels, where gravity load bends the member about one clear axis
- Bracing members, where the long face can be oriented to resist the dominant wind or seismic load direction
- Spandrel and edge beams, where a shallow-but-wide section fits a tight floor-to-floor dimension better than a deep square one
Columns, by contrast, often stay square or round, since column load is closer to axisymmetric and a square section resists buckling equally in both directions - worth checking with the structural engineer before assuming RHS is the right call for every member on a job.
Building Elements Where Black RHS Is Commonly Specified
Structural columns (interior, fireproofed) Heavier wall (8–20 mm typical) to carry axial load; black finish standard since fireproofing is almost always specified for interior structural steel in occupied buildings.
Floor and roof beams Mid-range wall depending on span and load; RHS oriented for bending strength; black finish if fireproofed or enclosed above a ceiling.
Bracing and moment frames Wall thickness governed by connection design (bolt or weld capacity at the gusset) as much as by axial load; black finish standard where field welding is part of the erection sequence.
Curtain wall and façade support mullions Lighter wall, often smaller RHS sizes; finish depends on whether the mullion sits inside the building envelope (black, painted) or is exposed to the exterior face (galvanized or painted after galvanizing).
Canopy and covered walkway framing Exterior-exposed - this is the exception where black is not appropriate unless a full paint system is applied immediately after erection; most projects specify galvanized or painted-and-sealed tube here instead.
FAQ
Q: Is black steel tube the same as raw or unfinished steel?
A: Essentially yes - "black" means the tube has no applied coating beyond the light oil film used to prevent shipping rust. It still has mill scale on the surface from hot rolling, which is a different thing from rust and is usually removed during blast-cleaning before painting or fireproofing.
Q: Can black rectangular tube be galvanized later if plans change?
A: Yes, black tube can be hot-dip galvanized after the fact as long as it hasn't already been welded into a fully enclosed assembly (welded box sections need vent holes for galvanizing, which should be planned before fabrication, not after).
Q: Does black finish affect the structural strength of the tube?
A: No - finish is a surface treatment and doesn't change the tube's mechanical properties. Strength is governed by the steel grade and wall thickness, which are the same whether the tube is black, galvanized, or painted.
Q: Why would a structural engineer specify black steel instead of galvanized for an indoor building frame?
A: Mainly cost and compatibility with fireproofing. Galvanizing adds cost and complicates intumescent coating adhesion, and it protects against corrosion the member will never actually encounter if it's fully enclosed inside conditioned building space.
