STKR400 vs STKR490 - What Actually Changes
JIS G3466 defines two grades, not a long ladder like some structural standards carry. STKR400 has a minimum tensile strength of 400 MPa and yield point around 245 MPa; STKR490 steps up to a minimum tensile strength of 490 MPa with a higher yield point, achieved through a higher carbon/manganese content rather than a different production process. Both are cold-formed ERW tube from coil - the grade difference sits entirely in the steel chemistry going into the mill, not in how the tube is shaped or welded.
STKR400 covers the large majority of general structural and machinery-frame work. STKR490 gets specified where a structural calculation needs the higher yield point to reduce section size or where a Japanese design standard (built around STKR490 as its default higher grade) calls for it directly - it's worth checking your project's structural drawings for the grade callout rather than defaulting to STKR400 on the assumption that "standard" means "lower grade."
The JIS Mark Question Most RFQs Don't Ask
This is worth addressing directly because it trips up buyers who haven't sourced JIS material before: producing tube that meets the JIS G3466 technical specification and holding the official JIS mark (the certification licensed by Japan's accreditation system, following an on-site audit of the specific production line) are two different things. A mill can manufacture fully to the JIS G3466 chemistry, dimensions, and mechanical property requirements - verifiable through standard mill test certificates and third-party inspection - without holding JIS mark certification, which is a separate and specifically Japan-administered scheme.

It has its own preferred outer dimension and wall thickness combinations, and the corresponding theoretical weight per meter is calculated against those specific dimensions - not always identical to what a same-OD, same-WT tube from a different standard would weigh, once corner radius and forming tolerance differences are accounted for. On projects where structural calculations were run against JIS section tables, substituting an ASTM or EN section of "equivalent" size without checking the weight and section property tables against JIS G3466 specifically can leave the actual built section slightly off from what the calc assumed.
