A106 is manufactured within ASTM's dimensional tolerance band, and every heat within that band is compliant - but a fabrication shop building spools against ANSI B16.9 fittings and flanges feels tolerance differently than a plant running one pipe in the ground. Two different heats, both fully within tolerance, can still sit at opposite ends of the OD and wall range. On most piping runs that difference is invisible. On tight-fit spool assemblies - close-coupled fittings, pre-welded manifolds, skid piping with fixed flange bolt patterns - that same-tolerance-but-different-heat variance is what shows up as a flange face that won't sit flush or a bolt hole that's a few degrees off after two spools from different heats are welded into one assembly.
This is a sourcing decision, not a compliance issue: keeping one heat behind a matched set of spools removes the variable before it becomes a shop problem.
Weldability for Shop Fabrication
A106's silicon-killed, fine-grain steel gives it a workable carbon equivalent for shop welding without special procedures in most schedules and grades. For fabrication planning, this generally means:
