Why Doesn't S420 Use the Same J0/J2 Naming System as S275 and S355?
If you've specified S275J0H or S355J2H before, the S420 designation looks different on purpose. S420 hollow section is classified under the "N" delivery condition system (S420NH, S420NLH) rather than the "J" impact-subgrade system. The difference isn't cosmetic:
- J-designated grades (J0H, J2H) describe steel delivered in the as-rolled or as-formed condition, with the letter indicating the impact test temperature.
- N-designated grades describe steel that has been normalized - reheated to refine the grain structure after forming - which is what makes it possible to combine a 420 MPa minimum yield strength with reliable low-temperature toughness in the first place. Without that grain refinement step, fine-grain steel at this strength level doesn't reliably hold its toughness margin.
NH carries a 0 degC impact guarantee; NLH extends that down to around -50 degC for structures with a genuinely low minimum service temperature. Most buyers only need NH - NLH is a specific-project spec, not a default upgrade.
Where Does S420 Actually Save You Money Over S355?
This is the question we get asked least often and should get asked most: a higher yield strength lets you use a thinner wall for the same load-carrying capacity. On a compression or bending member governed by strength rather than deflection, stepping from S355 to S420 can let the same structural check pass at a noticeably lighter section:
- Lower shipped tonnage on long-span trusses, columns, or braced frames where strength - not stiffness - governs the design
- Reduced weld volume on connections sized to the thinner wall, which also trims fabrication labor
- A real trade-off, not a free upgrade - S420 costs more per tonne than S355 and typically runs on a longer lead time, so the saving only shows up when the design is actually strength-governed rather than deflection- or buckling-governed
We ask buyers evaluating S420 against S355 to send us the governing load case, not just the target grade - on a deflection-critical member, the extra strength buys you nothing and S355 remains the better order.
What Sizes Do We Currently Run in S420?
- Square (SHS): 20x20mm to 500x500mm
- Rectangular (RHS): 20x10mm to 1500x1000mm
- Circular (CHS): 114mm to 610mm OD
- Wall thickness: 4mm to 25mm
- Standards: EN 10210-1 (hot-finished, normalized during the hot-forming cycle) or EN 10219-1 (cold-formed, normalized as a separate post-forming step)
- Standard lengths: 6m and 12m
How Do We Confirm the Normalizing Actually Happened?
Because "normalized" is a process claim, not something visible on the finished section, we tie it to a verifiable production record rather than a certificate line alone:
- Furnace log traceable to the batch - normalizing temperature and soak time recorded per heat, not assumed from a general process description.
- Grain size verification on production samples, confirming the fine-grain structure the strength/toughness combination depends on.
- Charpy testing at the specified temperature (0 degC for NH, -50 degC for NLH), drawn from post-normalizing material.
- Full mechanical property retest after forming on the EN 10219 cold-formed route, since normalizing is applied after the cold-forming step, not before it.
- 3.1 certificates issued on request, cross-referenced to the furnace log for buyers who want to verify the normalizing step independently.
FAQ
Q: Is S420NH available ex-stock, or is it always a production order?
A: It's a production order in the sizes and tonnages we've listed above - S420 doesn't move in the volumes that justify holding finished stock, so plan lead time in from the start rather than assuming stock availability.
Q: Do you supply S420 under both EN 10210 and EN 10219?
A: Yes - tell us your fabricator's welding procedure and design basis, since the two standards use the same NH/NLH designation but different forming routes.
Q: Can S420 be welded with the same procedures used for S355?
A: It requires attention to preheat and heat input given the higher strength and the normalized microstructure - send us your welding procedure specification and we can flag anything that needs adjusting before you qualify it.
Q: What's the minimum order quantity for a custom S420 size?
A: It's driven by the normalizing furnace batch size referenced above - confirm your size and required tonnage and we'll tell you the minimum run for that specific dimension.
