Which S355 Grade Do We Recommend: J0H, J2H or K2H?
All three share the same S355 strength level. What changes is the Charpy impact test temperature and energy we certify on your lot:
- S355J0H - tested at 0 degC. The economical choice for indoor frames, mezzanine beams, and racking.
- S355J2H - tested at -20 degC. Our default for outdoor trusses, canopies, and exports to cold-winter regions.
- S355K2H - higher impact energy at -20 degC. We recommend it for crane runways, vehicle chassis, and other members under repeated loading.
Send us the lowest service temperature and the member type, and our written offer will name the grade. Impact values are built into the lot at production, so we settle this at quotation.
How Do We Keep Long RHS Members Straight and Usable?
A 12 m RHS that arrives bowed or twisted costs the fabricator time before the first cut. These are the points we control and record on the RHS we ship:
- Sweep (lateral straightness) - straightened after forming and checked against an internal target of 0.15% of length, about 18 mm over 12 m.
- Twist - measured along the tube, because a twisted chord fights every gusset and end plate.
- Wall thickness on both wide and narrow faces - checked on all four faces, so the section properties in your calculation stay true.
- Weld seam position - the seam sits in the flat of a face, away from the corners, and we can mark the seam side on request so your team can plan the cut and weld orientation.
- Corner radius - held within the standard's limit, so mitred and coped joints match the drawing.
- End squareness on cut-to-length orders - cut faces checked against the tube axis before bundling.
Measurements are logged at first-off, at every coil change, and on sampled tubes through the run.
What Do We Test and Certify?
- Chemical analysis on every heat, with CEV reported on request for welding procedure planning.
- Tensile and Charpy impact tests per lot, at the temperature that matches your grade.
- Flattening and drift-expanding tests on the weld seam.
- Weld seam NDT - ultrasonic or eddy current, in line.
- Documents - EN 10204 3.1 as standard; 3.2 with SGS, BV, TUV, or your nominated inspector, who may witness testing at our mill.
Where Does S355 Pay Off in an RHS, and Where Does It Not?
We tell our customers this openly, because it saves them money:
- Strength-governed members (tension chords, short-span beams, columns, boom sections): S355 lets the designer use a lighter section than S235 for the same load.
- Stiffness-governed members (long-span floor beams, members limited by deflection): the elastic modulus of S355 is the same as S235, so a higher grade adds strength but no extra stiffness. On these members, a deeper section, not a higher grade, solves the problem.
