Where Does ERW Fit, and Where Do We Recommend Another Route?
We tell buyers straight: ERW is the most economical route for most building, framing and machinery sections, but it has a ceiling. When a section needs a wall above roughly 16 mm, or a size above the ranges shown, we quote submerged-arc welded or hot-finished sections instead of stretching ERW past what it does best. You get the right product for the load, not the product our mill happens to run.
How Does Coil Become a Hollow Section on Our ERW Lines?
The mechanics explain why ERW is fast and consistent:
- Strip width equals section perimeter. We slit each coil to the exact width for the target profile, so wall thickness comes straight from the coil gauge rather than from additional plate work.
- Continuous forming. The strip is roll-formed into a round tube, welded, then sized. Square and rectangular profiles are formed from that tube in the same line, so there is no separate section-making step.
- High throughput. A running mill turns out finished 6 m and 12 m bars around the clock, which is why repeat orders of one size can be scheduled tightly.
- Heat-number traceability. Every bundle traces back to its coil, so any question about chemistry or mechanical properties leads to a single mill certificate.
Will Every Delivery Match the Last One?
Repeat buyers ask this before anything else, and it is where ERW pays off. Because tube geometry is fixed by the strip and the forming rolls, the same size delivers the same profile shipment after shipment. We check the following on every lot:
- Wall thickness at multiple points on the section, not a single reading
- Weight per meter against theoretical weight, which is what you are billed on
- Straightness and twist on full-length bars
- Corner radius and face flatness on SHS and RHS
- End squareness on cut bars
Steel sold by weight is only as good as its wall thickness, so we treat this as a commercial control as much as a technical one.
Case: How Did an Importer Stop Losing Weight on Repeat Shipments?
A distributor in the Middle East imported 480 tonnes of 100 x 100 x 4 mm SHS across three shipments. On a previous supplier's order, the actual weight of a 6 m bar had run about 3.1% under theoretical, leaving them paying for roughly 15 tonnes of steel that never arrived.
