ASTM Standard ERW Steel Pipe
Details
In global construction, industrial manufacturing, and general engineering, selecting piping materials that offer mechanical consistency, high dimensional accuracy, and cost efficiency is essential. ASTM Standard ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) Steel Pipes are widely used across global markets for structural framing, mechanical components, fluid transmission, and piling applications.

 PRODUCT

Tianjin Brisk Steel focus on produce and supply hollow section and steel pipe

Manufacturing Types

  • Standards for ERW pipe require a uniform weld microstructure, and stress-relief annealing of the weld seam is generally mandatory for Grade B material.

  • The scope is divided into two major categories: ERW standards for pressurized fluid transport (requiring hydrostatic leak-tightness testing for medium conveyance) and ERW standards for structural applications (focusing on mechanical strength and bending/flattening performance; use under pressure is strictly prohibited).

ERW PROCESS

ERW PIPE PRODUCT PROCESS

ASTM Standards for ERW Pressure Piping (for Water, Gas and Fire Protection)

ASTM A53 / A53M (Globally common ERW pipe for low-pressure fluid service; highest shipment volume)

  • Covers both seamless and welded pipes: "Type E" specifically refers to ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) pipe. Sizes range from NPS 1/8 to NPS 24, with wall thicknesses matching ASME B36.10 Schedules 40 and 80.

  • Applications include water supply and drainage, municipal gas distribution, low-pressure steam, fire protection branch lines, and general steel structural components.

  • Available delivery conditions: Black pipe and Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG).

  • Mandatory testing items: hydrostatic test (full-length water pressure test held for 5 seconds with no leakage), flattening test, and eddy current testing of the weld seam; pipes with NPS ≤ 2 must pass a 90° cold bending test; threading, grooving, and flange processing services are available.

ASTM A795 / A795M (Galvanized ERW Pipe for Fire Sprinkler Systems)

  • A mandatory standard for fire protection projects in North America, compatible with UL/FM certification requirements.

  • Production is limited to hot-dip galvanized ERW round pipe, suitable for wet- and dry-pipe fire sprinkler systems. Mechanical properties align with ASTM A53 Grade B; specific fire-safety requirements apply regarding galvanizing adhesion and cleanliness, and the supply of bare black pipe is not permitted.

ASTM Standards for ERW Structural Steel Pipe (Construction HSS)

ASTM A500 / A500M

  • Sections: Round, square, and rectangular tubing (HSS)
  • Common grades (Gr. B and Gr. C typically stocked for export)
  • Subjected to flattening, tensile, and bending tests; no mandatory hydrostatic pressure test required. Outer diameter tolerance is ±1%, and wall thickness tolerance is ±12.5%. It offers excellent compatibility with hot-dip galvanizing, making it the preferred choice for overseas steel structure projects.

ASTM A501/A501M Hot-Formed ERW Structural Tubing

  • Manufactured via welding using hot-rolled base material; suitable for hot bending, hot-dip galvanizing, and high-temperature forging. Commonly used for load-bearing bridge components and heavy-duty steel structural columns.

Standard Testing System for ERW Pipe

  • Chemical Analysis: Heat analysis plus finished-product spot checks; control of harmful elements (C, Mn, S, P)
  • Mechanical Testing: Tensile test (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation), flattening test (no weld cracking or delamination), reverse flattening test, and bend test
  • Weld NDT (Non-Destructive Testing): Eddy Current (ET), Ultrasonic (UT), and Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL); higher sampling rates for fluid-service pipes
  • Hydrostatic Testing: Mandatory only for fluid-service standards; not required for structural-grade pipes
  • Dimensional Verification: Full inspection of outside diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness, and end-face squareness
  • Surface Treatment: Anti-rust oil, black paint, clear varnish, and hot-dip galvanizing (standard zinc coating: 70-85 μm)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can ASTM A500 HSS pipes be used for water or gas transportation?

A: Not recommended. A500 is purely designed for structural bearing without standardized hydrostatic inspection. Hidden leakage risks will exist under medium pressure; choose ASTM A53 Gr.B ERW pipe for fluid transmission.

Q: Do your ERW weld seams need heat treatment?

A: A53, A500 adopt online weld leveling treatment to guarantee weld integrity without mandatory post-weld heat treatment.

Q: What surface finishes can you supply for ASTM ERW steel pipes?

A: Black bare pipe with anti-rust oil, black painted, varnish coated, hot-dip galvanized (HDG, 70–85μm zinc layer standard).

Q: Match the right ASTM ERW standard to my project simply?

A: Water/gas pipeline → A53 Gr.B; fire sprinkler system → A795 galvanized ERW; workshop & bus station steel frame → A500 Gr.B/C HSS; foundation steel piling → A252.
