Where we supply A53 for fire protection
We quote A53 for these parts of a fire protection scope without hesitation:
- Underground fire mains from the water source to the riser
- Standpipe risers and cross mains, where local AHJ approval permits A53
- Fire pump suction and discharge piping
- Exposed piping outside the boundary of a listed automatic sprinkler system
For the automatic sprinkler zone itself - the wet-pipe or dry-pipe branch and cross mains under NFPA 13 - most jurisdictions and insurers require UL Listed or FM Approved pipe. A53 does not carry that listing, no matter the wall thickness or finish we apply. When your scope falls in that zone, we say so at quotation and can supply the correct listed product (such as ASTM A795) for that portion instead of filling the order with A53 and leaving the listing gap for your inspector to find.
We ask this upfront because "fire protection pipe" on a purchase order doesn't tell us which of these two categories your job needs, and getting it wrong in either direction costs you: over-specifying a listed product where A53 was acceptable adds cost and lead time you didn't need to spend, and under-specifying it where a listing was required means a failed inspection and a re-order.
Grade B and wall thickness - what we stock and why
We supply Grade B for essentially all fire protection orders rather than Grade A - the higher 35,000 psi minimum yield gives more margin on standpipe and main pressure ratings, and it's what our mill runs consistently across the full size range. Two wall thicknesses cover most of what we ship:
- Schedule 40 - our default recommendation for standpipe and main runs. Thick enough to thread reliably and matched to the pipe schedule tables most fire protection specs reference.
- Schedule 10 - lighter, lower cost, and what we recommend when your installer is set up for roll-grooved joints rather than threading, since Schedule 10 wall is usually too thin to thread to a reliable root thickness.
We check hanger spacing and joint method against whichever schedule you order before it ships - mixing Schedule 10 pipe into a system detailed for Schedule 40 hanger spacing is a common cause of inspection pushback we can catch at the quote stage instead of after installation.
Finish: what we recommend for which run
For underground mains and any exposed or high-humidity section, we recommend hot-dip galvanizing per ASTM A123 - most water utilities and AHJs expect it on buried or exposed fire protection runs, and we apply it in-house as part of the same order. For interior standpipe risers in conditioned building space, black pipe is usually adequate and faster for us to ship. One thing we're clear about with every customer: galvanizing an A53 pipe does not add a UL Listing or FM Approval. If your sprinkler zone needs a listed product, galvanized A53 still isn't a substitute for it.

A: Yes - this is one of the most common uses we see for A53 in a fire protection system, usually galvanized or with an exterior coating we apply for buried service. Confirm depth and coating requirements with your local water authority and AHJ, since these vary by jurisdiction, and we'll match the finish to what you tell us.
Q: What's the difference between the A53 you sell and A795?
A: A53 is a general-purpose pressure piping standard we supply across many industries; A795 is written specifically for fire protection and commonly carries UL Listing or FM Approval as part of the product. Where your scope needs a listed product, we quote A795 or another listed option instead of A53.
Q: Do you supply Schedule 10 threaded, or only grooved?
A: We can thread Schedule 10 on request, but we generally recommend roll grooving at this schedule since the thin wall often can't hold a reliable thread root. Schedule 40 threads reliably in most sizes we ship for fire protection.
