Basic Definition & Manufacturing Process

Seamless Steel Pipe

Seamless pipes are produced without any welding seam. Solid steel billets are heated and pierced under high pressure and temperature, then stretched and rolled to form a hollow tube. The entire pipe is a single piece of steel, with no longitudinal or spiral joints.

ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) Steel Pipe

ERW pipes are made from hot-rolled steel coils. The steel strip is formed into a circular shape, and the two edges are heated and welded together under electric resistance pressure, creating a longitudinal weld seam along the pipe. This is a cost-effective, high-efficiency welding process.

Key Performance Differences

Parameter

Seamless Pipe

ERW Pipe

Structure Integrity

No weld seam, uniform wall thickness and material structure, high overall strength and density

Has a longitudinal weld seam; weld area has slightly different material properties compared with the base metal

Pressure Resistance

Excellent high-pressure, high-temperature and corrosion resistance, suitable for extreme working conditions

Good pressure resistance for medium and low pressure applications; limited in ultra-high pressure environments

Dimensional Accuracy

Moderate precision, wall thickness tolerance is relatively larger

High dimensional accuracy, smooth surface, consistent diameter and wall thickness

Wall Thickness & Diameter Range

Suitable for thick-walled, large-diameter and special-sized pipes

Mainly for medium and small diameters, thin to medium wall thickness

Cost & Production Efficiency

  • Seamless Pipe: Complex production process, low output, high raw material and processing costs, higher selling price.

  • ERW Pipe: Automated production line, fast speed, low energy consumption and material loss, lower cost, more economical for large-scale projects.

Typical Applications

Seamless Pipe Applications

  • High-pressure oil and gas transmission pipelines, well drilling pipelines

  • High-temperature and high-pressure equipment in power plants, chemical plants and refineries

  • Mechanical structural parts, hydraulic pipelines, automotive and engineering machinery

  • Offshore engineering, deep-water operations and harsh industrial environments

ERW Pipe Applications

  • Municipal water supply, gas distribution and low-pressure fluid pipelines

  • Building structures, steel pipe piles, scaffolding and pipe supports

  • General fluid transportation, agricultural irrigation, public infrastructure

  • Steel structures for greenhouses, warehouses, and ordinary mechanical casings

Summary of Core Differences

Seamless pipes stand out for their seamless structure, extreme pressure resistance and durability, ideal for heavy-duty, high-demand working conditions. ERW pipes feature high precision, low cost and high production efficiency, making them the top choice for routine, medium and low-pressure engineering projects. Selection between the two depends on working pressure, environmental conditions, project budget and usage requirements.
