Common Standard Steel Grades for Construction SHS & RHS

 

In global construction trade, three mainstream standards are universally adopted: Chinese GB standard, American ASTM standard and European EN standard. These grades cover low-strength conventional construction, medium-load steel structure and high-strength low-temperature resistant building projects. All grades below are the most frequently selected for construction engineering.

 

  • Chinese Standard (GB/T 700 & GB/T 6728): Q235B (General construction), Q355B (High-strength building support)

 

  • American Standard (ASTM A500): Grade B (Medium-load structure), Grade C (Heavy-load building framework)

 

  • European Standard (EN 10219 Cold-formed Hollow Section): S235JR (Ordinary architectural decoration), S355J0H (0℃ low-temperature construction), S355J2H (-20℃ extreme cold region building)

Applicable grades: GB Q235B, EN S235JR. These low-carbon steel grades feature low cost, easy cutting, bending and welding. They are widely used in residential buildings, small shopping malls, temporary construction buildings, fence frames, stair handrails, interior decoration keels and light curtain wall supports.

 

2. Medium-Span Steel Structure Buildings

Applicable grade: ASTM A500 Grade B. With stable mechanical performance and moderate yield strength, this grade is preferred for American-standard industrial workshops, warehouse buildings, logistics storage frames, exhibition halls and outdoor advertising support structures.

 

3. Heavy-Duty & High-Rise Buildings

Applicable grades: ASTM A500 Grade C, GB Q355B. High yield strength and compression resistance enable these tubes to bear heavy load. They are commonly used for high-rise building steel frames, large-span factory trusses, parking garage structures and bridge auxiliary supports.

 

4. Low-Temperature & Harsh Environment Buildings

Applicable grades: EN S355J0H, S355J2H. With certified low-temperature impact resistance, these European-standard tubes are specially used for buildings in northern cold regions, outdoor stadium steel structures, offshore auxiliary buildings and weather-resistant engineering construction.
